I'm looking for some freeware that I can use to convert some flac files to wma VBR lossless, I did do a search here but only came up with dBpoweramp which you seem to have to buy to use for this purpose.

Anyone have any suggestions? I use foobar (the 0.9 version I think) and wmp11 - is there a plug in available for either of these?

thanks in advance,
Fran

EDIT:

OK, I got this fixed - I got plugins for player and burners so I'm sorted now. Don't know how I couldn't find any of this stuff last night, it all just popped up in front of me tonight!

Well, when I started a couple of years ago loading CDs onto my PC I did a fair bit of reading around and the prevailing opinion at the time was that for a given bit rate WMA sounded better than MP3. I remember one site in particular had done listening tests with a good number of people and at bit rates upto 192 a large proportion preferred wma, after that it evened out.

So I started encoding with wma and never really changed. I use a zen sleek now and again which plays wma so the itunes/ipod non-support of wma is not an issue for me. So bought CDs are encoded as lossless vbr (mathematically lossless) and downloaded stuff at either 256 or 320 kbps depending on what it is.

mp3 lame has improved alot over the years.

right now it is like neck and neck with aac, im not sure where wma is, but i dont think it's worth locking urself into wma.
