I looking into buying my first audiophile "on a budget headphones."
I already have a huge Kenwood vintage amp and cd player.

would this properly drive a semi audiophile headphones?


im looking into the open audio technica models. Are these good?
the lowest model seems to be the ath ad300 at $69.
Should i get these?
and theres a sale on the ath a500 art headphones on audiocubes also.
The max i can spend is maybe $130 on each a headphone or a portable amp if necessary.



i could probably spend $200 on each but the purchases would have to be months apart before i could save money.

I'd second Grado SR60s/80s as entry-level audiophile gateway-drug type cans, especially if you listen to rock, metal or industrial.

They'll both play well even out of an iPod, and do well with any sort of source, even poorly-recorded heavy metal.

The AD700 could be powered by your receiver, and it can be bought new online for ~$105 shipped.

Then, I suggest not considering the HD555 or AD700. Probably better off with closed headphones. HD25-1 II would be a good option.

The HD555 and AD700 can be enjoyed with all genres and styles. However, for your budget and the music you listen to, FWIR, I think you likely would enjoy the HD25-1 II more. The HD25-1 II sells new on eBay for ~$183 shipped. Head-Fiers have reported enjoying it without an amp, but it also can sound better with an amp. I suggest considering an amp for it after you've used it, can afford a good one, and have determined what that amp may be from posting/reading in the portable or full size amp forum.

There are other headphones within your budget that you also may prefer to the HD555 and AD700. Perhaps others will post their suggestions for you.

what amp do you recommend for the hd555, ad700, and hd25-1 II for under $150?

I suggest reading and posting in the portable amp forum. I don't think you'll be getting your money's worth from the HD555 or AD700 with or without an amp. Again, there probably are other $300+ headphone or headphone/amp solutions worthy of your consideration.
