First published review of the MetroFi 220

Are you unhappy with the Apple phones, if so why? Without knowing what your looking for different from what you have it's hard to make a recommendation. Having said that according to the reviewer's own comments they were not sure the 220 were worth the difference in cost from the 170 model. I think for the price of the phones depending on what your EXACTLY finding wrong with your Apple phones, there will be a better match for you.

I currently have er6i phones as well as the Apple IEMs. I really wanted to get a set with a microphone, but I did not want to spend too much to get it. I find the Apples to have more low end that the er6is, which I like, but also a lack of clarity in comparison, which I don't. But they are comfortable. A mixture of a little more base than the er6is and more clarity (or definition) than the Apples would be nice.

I am almost positive you would not get what your looking from the Metro.fi series of phones. They use a dynamic speaker which woould have more base but lack the clarity your looking for. You might want to take a good look at the Audeo Phonak phones I belive they have a model with mic or look at the Shure line of phones the MPA models have a microphone. Both the models I mentioned use balanced armature drivers which have better detail and I think they both would have better bass response than the the er6i phones you have.

BTW are you using the Apples Dual Driver In Ear phones or the older model Apple phones? I ask because the dual driver model that came out recently is using 2 balanced armature drivers and is supposed to have very strong detail orientation.

The Audeo Phonak model you might want to look is called PFE I believe.

I have both the PFEs and the Apple Dual Drivers, and I really am surprised to hear you want more detail. Those two phones are similar, but the PFEs cost $155 for the mic version, and I really am happy with the Apple DDs. Are you getting a good seal with them? I didn't like the OEM sleeves and changed to a pair of Sony Hybrid silicone single flange tips, which cost $9 on Amazon for four sizes. Why not try that, a much less expensive change?

I really like the detail from the Apple phones. Not everyone will agree, of course, but that would not be their weak spot. Maybe a little harshness, but I had the er6i in another life, and I got very tired of changing those annoying Ety filters, and found them very bass lite. Anyway, they are Etys, so maybe detail is better than Apple IEMs, but hard to believe they are that far apart.

Instead of new phones, get a nice iBasso T4 and use the bass boost with your Etys.

I will spend a little more time with the Apple DDs and report back (although I am no expert) I have only had them for 5 days. The PFEs look interesting, but more expensive and I see some references to cracking shells.

I do like the fit of the Apple DDs. Very comfortable.

You may find you have to allow your brain to breakin with the new phones. We often get used to a very specific sound signature and need to let our brain adjust to something different before we start to hear the benefits of one set of phones over another.
