Okay, this is my first post here so please no flaming. I don't pretend to be an expert by any means, but I am young and we all started somewhere, right?

So since this is my first post, I'll start with a WTB. (J/K) I am a United States Marine currently taking courses at the University of Mississippi in MIS as a Senior. That being said, I am looking at getting into the world of headphones. One of my friends is trying to sell me Ultrasone Proline HFI-2200 ULE for $150, but I was previously looking at a new Grado SR60 which is, from what I understand a good place to start.

Supposedly I scored pretty high on the hearing test before boot camp, so maybe I could make use of something a little nicer than what I've been used to ($10 set at Wal-Mart.) What set me off was the new WAVE 24/96 versions of the Nine Inch Nails album 'The Slip.' A 1.5 gb album has got to be nice to listen to, but as the disclaimer points out, you may need "extremely high-end audio equipment" to make any use of it. Home ownership being an issue, I'm going with headphones. Any suggestions would be appreciated; I'd love to meet some more experienced audiophiles out there.

Yup; welcome to the Forum!

Marines huh? Well, we won't hold that against ya!

....good ol' Navy here. How old?

I went aboard my ship on its' second cruise, and it's now the oldest active ship in the Navy! Near 50 She is!

Anyway; yeah, Grados are cool! I started with Grado/Alessandro and found I really got hooked....so be careful!

Welcome!

Watch out for your wallet. I spent so much here that I haven't renewed my contact lenses prescription and I've been left with an old pair of backup glasses for the past few months.

Slowly going blind.

Thanks guys! Yeah, I've heard this can quickly become an expensive hobby. Hopefully it'll be somewhere between duck hunting and polo. Ha ha. I suppose I should start small; with the Grado being so affordable and highly recommended from ya'll, I guess I'll go ahead and get it for something to base others on. As I determine what I like and don't like about it and others I tryout, I can make a more informed decision on what to get for a more expensive one. BTW the guy trying to sell the Ultrasone Proline HFI-2200 ULE is doing so because it's his third pair to buy recently and he's favoring keeping the other two... Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to take his third choice as my first.

one's trash can be another's treasure. we all have different taste, so what might be his 3rd rated phones may be your first. For 150$, I wouldnt mind picking up a pair of HFI 2200.

If you have sensitive hearing, Grado might not be the best place. the highs can get rather piercing.
Also, you are probably in a place with lots of people.

I would suggest the D1000 or ES7 as better options. Both sound better and can be had for only slightly more than the Grados while also being more durable.....

My ears are very sensitive (not necessarily good), and I have trouble listening to Grados after trying out other brands.

I wouldn't say my ears are overly "sensitive" as much as just able to hear most of the range from the hearing test. the test consisted of basically hearing a chime in one ear or the other and pushing a left or right button when you hear the noise. the results came back as what frequencies you responded to with each ear. i didnt score perfect, but it was a long test and it got pretty boring. if anyone's interested, next time i go to base, I can look up my service record book and copy the results from the test.
