Hi all,
I've been lurking here for a while and after seeing the tasty and juicy reviews, I have decided to buy my first true headphones. I've been using the phones which came with my walkman some years back and its time I got some entry level phones. I have narrowed down my options to SR60 and HD-497 (or if you guys can recommend something similar). Max cost should be 150 CDN (including taxes, S&H, etc).

My music tastes are Metallica (old), Nirvana, Pink Floyd, Roger Waters, some Led Zeppelin and some old and new pop like Bryan Adams, Alanis Morrissette, etc. No rap, funk, classical. Also to be used for PC gaming (Diablo, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter, etc). Sound leak or portability is no issue. Mostly will be using with PC with zero portable use. Looks are not important at all but comfort is. Because I have never listened to these or better phones, I have no idea what they sound like. Upon recommendations from you I'll go for an audition before finally ordering.

Thanks for reading my post.

peace

Where in Canada are you? If you're in Toronto you can head over to Bay Bloor Audio to hear the Grados. They have the Senn HD600 but not sure if they have the HD497s

Yeah, I'm in T.O. (East end) and Bay Bloor Radio will be my auditioning place. The price offered by them for Grado SR60 is 130 + tax whereas I found a Nova Scotia online seller asking 119 (shipping + tax inclusive).

I know I'll be overwhelmed by seeing the variety and trying out the phones so maybe you guys can tell me what to expect. If I listen to more phones, I'll be more confused . Are there other phones in similar price and quality range?

Thanks

I got the Sony V6s a few months ago for very similar purposes, and they are excellent. If you can find them, from a place that ships to Canada, consider them along the other two. The V6s are about US$70 new; the nearly-identical V7506s are US$110.

Check my profile for my taste in music. These headphones are great for everything I listen to.

The V6s are closed, while the two you've listed are open. From what I've read here, any of those three would be a good choice for you.

$150Can ~ $110US, I think you should go get a pair of Song V6. It sounds good, but it does not look as COOL as Eggo 66. You have try the Grado right? do you feel uncomfortable? If no, Grado SR80 is good choice too.

Also, try to buy it online, it is much cheaper.

No, I have not auditioned any phones as yet. But I'll add Sony V6 to my auditioning list which already has SR60 and HD-497. From reading reviews and checking out previous posts here, I'm being tilted towards the Grados, dunno why

. As I mentioned already, open or closed and portability is no issue. I'll go out audition the phones in two days time and let's see what I bring with me

Thanks for your input

sr60>497's>v6's (but I like them all)

A few posts down are others rankings.

If you get the 60's get the Senn or vwap pads. If you get the V6's get the Beyer pads.

They can all be comfortable, but the 60's get the most complaints. The 497's can be a problem with big heads (overnight on a basketball can help). The V6's with Beyer velour are very comfy.

I got the Sony V6 and like them well enough. Really provide a lot of bass and sound pretty decent for the money. I don't like the coiled cord so much but can live with it.

Someone's selling his V6 on the FS forums now. I would buy stuff from US because of the low exchange rate
