Would the Firestone Audio Cute Beyond be a good match for my AKG k501's? Im on a budget and in Australia, and they seem to be easily available and in the right pricerange.. Its also my first amp, doesn't need to be anything too amazing.
Anyone have any experience with this amp, with any phone, or even more particularily with AKGs? Cheers (i've searched but couldn't find much on the subject...)

My experience with this great little wonder goes back when I used them pairing with Grado SR225, but mine was Encore one. The results were very good. I have also tried them with RS1, DT770 and HD580 no problem what so ever. So I think you will be very happy with your K501 as well.

When we had a mini meet with Digitalmind we have put Encore vs. Beyond and Rik likes Encore better. So maybe you can try Encore as well.

Good luck

I have driven my old 600 ohm AKG 141 with my Cute Beyond with no trouble at all. There's a high/low gain switch on the back, so the amp works well with pretty much any headphones.

It also has socketed opamps, so you can upgrade cheaply and easily. I replaced the Burr-Brown opamps in both my Cute Beyond and my Fubar II with OPA2107s and it was a definite improvement. It wasn't that I felt I needed to upgrade, mind you. The amp and DAC both sounded pretty good stock. I'm just one of those people who has trouble leaving well enough alone.
