I can't help but feel like I'm in a pit with this. Bands don't really stick to me and whenever I sit down to put stuff on my player I can never think of anything good to put on it. I shuffle through songs on my mp3 player and half of them are like meh, skip. What do you guys do to find new music?

The real story is that most of what I'm listening to was either directly recommended by, or indirectly the result of a comment made by Davey. Search out this man's reviews; read, learn, and listen. Davey's reviews have led me to albums, that have led me to other albums by the same band, then other albums by musicians in, or producers of that band, and other albums by other bands in a given genre. It has been a fascinating, rewarding, totally cool journey that I hope continues into the future. I am also constantly scanning the music-related threads here at Head-Fi. I have bought a good deal of music because someone's review or description of the music that they're listening to, and enthusiastic about, has intrigued me on some level. Virometal is another fellow-adventurer in the world of recorded music that has led me to great new music. I have also found Pitchfork, Paste, and occasionally Rolling Stone to be a source of interesting leads to new music. There is nothing cooler to me than the buzz I get from hearing music that is new to me and that blows me away.

give examples of bands you listen to right now. odds are you are listening to music for the hell of it and don't actually like the bands you listen to. teach yourself to be more critical and objective, it did me a world of good.

I really like allmusic.com when you search an artist they give you a list of similar artists, who they were influenced by, and bands that followed them, good way to check out other bands.

X2

Tracing the influences of your favorite contemporary bands back to their various sources is one of the best ways to broaden your tastes. And Allmusic is great for that.

I also look at lists on Amazon sometimes or "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" and "Explore Similar Items". Found some really nice stuff that way.

RYM is actually very bad for recommendations. i used to think it was great, but after i look through it, the horrendous tagging and what not means you won't be able to dig all that far in the genre. AMG, threads in this forum, amazon, friends, are all far better.

Odds are, you're probably limiting yourself too much to the kinds of music you listen to. If you only listen to current rock, you're going to get bored eventually.

See ya

Try jazz, classical, country & western, bluegrass and blues. There's enough there to keep you entertained for the rest of your life.

See ya
