I furroved the original grille with a soldering gun, and cracked it out with a screwdriver. Then superglued some thin brass net over that terrible hole, put a tiny circle of duct tape to the center of the net (that's actually what I screwed my grados up for - to block some resonances caused by reflections from the magnet core). Finally I put a circle cut from CD-pocket cloth (I like this cloth very much - it's thin and almost transparent for air, but not for dust) under the the bowl pad.
Now the cans don't even look ugly (despite of actually being) and sound somewhat mellower - I think I got what I wanted (yes, i always dreamed about losing the warranty

Am I stupid?

See what I've made and what I got rid of:

The brass grid was too dense thus making the sound too fat, so I replaced it with a thinner steel one.
I would call new sound less aggressive and, I believe, the soundstage has improved.

wow brave mod you got there!!! IMHO the most significant mod one can do is to alter the mesh / fabric screen that most manufacturers place between the driver and ear. Minor changes can yield BIG differences in frequency / dynamic / transient response and separation / imaging.

you've got me eyeing my MS2..

Looks like there's really no going back from that mod though, so i think i'll leave it
