They have a different sound. I can tell that right away. Right now they seem to have a soft sound with great ability to hear new insturments and detail --- maybe soft because breaking in is the key with these phones. My initial impression on these unbroken in phones is tha the bass is a bit weak but tight --- at least right now and compared to 650s.

But why do phones with relatively low impedence need an amp turned on relatively high --- say the Emmerline sr-71. I can always switch to my Channel Islands amp and power supply which I suspect will make the 701s sound great --- once they are broken in.

A proud member of the 701 Club.

P.S. Where is the number?

It's on the inside of the upper white piece - right side - that holds the headband to the gray arcs.

Above the right headphone cup at the base of the headband.

Volume needed depends on your source player, the recording itself, and your ears. With my cd deck and sr-71, if I go past 8 o'clock the 701 gets real loud. Round the same amt as the HD650 (stock).
