portable dacs are dying, and this one is useless if you have m17 LOL
Whatever...

This monster cost the half of m17, and beats the gryphon on every aspect costing only 150$ more...

From an user of the gryphon, the battery issues and the problem with beta firmware released, the q7 comes with more features and better accessories versus the ifi.

Q5S has Bluetooth. Q7 has Bluetooth. The future Q9 will probably also have Bluetooth :)
A Q9? How the heck are they gonna top this one?

Portable DACs will always have a place since they are FAR cheaper than DAPs. M17 is double the Q7. M11 Plus is almost quadruple the BTR7. Portable DACs give the same sound quality for FAR less.

But yes, if you have an M17, this is useless for people since it is just the guts of the M17 minus the android player stuff.

Not strictly true.

Portable DAC's whether it be the smaller variety, Bluetooth or the likes of the Gryphon do not sound the same as a DAP.
They might run a less expensive DAP close in sound quality but not your medium DAPs and upwards.

I've tried various dongles, Bluetooth options and the likes of the Gryphon and others. None come close to the likes of a £1000+ plus DAP

Saying that I would be interested to hear how close this gets or the Shanlin H7 which looks an interesting prospect.

To be fair I wouldn't expect my £180 Fiio BTR7 to compete with my Cayin N8ii and it doesn't, different devices for different needs.

You still watch that guy?

What's wrong with zeos?

In either case, "sounds best when plugged in" isn't really what he was saying; he was pointing out that the highest gain setting is only usable when the Q7 is plugged in (and I doubt I would need the highest gain setting, so that's not really a point against it for me).

I'm interested in this and I don't care about the large size. I want "portable" because my main computer is a laptop and I like the idea of being able to move my DAC around the house or take it with me traveling. I don't need it to fit in my pocket. I just don't want to be tethered to a desk and wall outlet.

Topping G5 is better than gryphon imho and definitely more powerful at half the price.

I'm nit to impressed with q7 because like m17, it has to be plugged in for the best sound. Might as well get a desktop if you have to be plugged in imho.

Plugged to get the best sound?
U mean all the power right?

But what is different about the sound on battery vs. plugged-in? All that video indicates is that the highest gain setting isn't available on battery. Are there other perceived differences in sound quality between battery power and plugged-in?

iFi, for example, indicates that the Zen DAC sounds better plugged into the wall than running solely off USB power. So I know it's a thing, I'm just not convinced it's a thing for the Q7. Can anyone who has tried the Q7 verify that it "sounds better" plugged in?

Hi all,

Here's a FiiO launch that might arouse the community's interest. We’re ecstatic about the new FiiO Q7 Portable Desktop-Class DAC/Amp. While it’s only 6” on its longest side, it boasts desktop-level power, a THX amplifier, and an ESS SABRE DAC chip, making it an undeniable solution for digital nomads, frequent travelers, or anyone who simply needs to save space.

Nice. This is basically improved version. Thanks for sharing the info.

This device certainly looks interesting. I’d be curious to see how this effects the broader market. If I’m not mistaken, this is essentially a portable K9 PRO, releasing a lower price. Or an M17 without a built in player. I imagine this will have an effect on the resale of the aforementioned products. Will be out on the look for cheap k9s/m17s in the near future.

I don’t understand why Zoes is often so disliked on forums online. Does anyone care to explain the negative disposition people seem to have? I mean, he gives a few bad reccomendations every now and then, but so does every reviewer at some point, no?
