Comparing the DX120 and the M9, the difference between target audience is clear. The DX120 is audiophile oriented while the M9 is mainstream consumer oriented.

I guess if I want to upgrade from my current X1 1st gen any of those should be a big step forward? I'm currently leaning towards M9 as I'm definitely not an audiophile (just want decent sound), want bluetooth in a DAP and don't really like design of DX120. Or it sounds much better than M9 so I should really go for it?

Hopefully I can live with it. In all other ways, this looks like a great upgrade from the n3. One other question, does it by chance do variable level line out? I need 1.3vrms or less for my car but prefer 1.5+ for all other situations.
You'll have to ask @JamesFiiO about that

If you really want Bluetooth then get the M9.

Sound wise I do find the DX120 to be a tier up. Its a sound chameleon actually. Aside from 5 digital filters it also has 5 sound modes that can change it from neutral to warm sounding. If I were to go for the DX120 it would mainly be for the superior bass extension.

Either way both would be much better than the X1.

you can choose a fixed line out or a variable line out.

DX120 vs M9

Comparing the DX120 and the M9, the difference between target audience is clear. The DX120 is audiophile oriented while the M9 is mainstream consumer oriented.

The DX120 is noticeably more accomplished on a technical level. Its clearer, more detailed, more articulate and more revealing while having better macro and micro dynamics. Soundstage is noticeably wider on the DX120 too.

Drastic as it sounds, the difference between the DX120 and M9 is actually smaller compared to the difference between the M9 and the X5iii.

Personally, I think the M9 would be for people who want a more tonally accurate X5iii but still want a similar level of warmth.

One odd thing about FiiO daps is that they seem to lack bass extension. They don't rumble as deep as it should. Anybody notice the same thing?

In our roadmap , from M9, all is to audiophile. of course, customer may have different opinion, I just want to share what we thinked when we designed a prodcut.

Thanks for the clarification. In that case, what would be the main difference between the M series and the X series?

Thanks! What about UI - which one works better in your opinion?

I would imagine that the difference is that the x series is full android and able to use the play store (at least) and in the case of the 7, swoppable amp units.

The X1 and X3 don't have android

Both are fast and responsive but the M9 somehow feels smoother.

Apologies, thought he was talking about x5-iii and x7!
No worries.

I hope we do get a definitive answer to what the M and X lines are.
