I never said that I had a list of issues but I see that you have one in your latest post (or is that for the M9).

Yeah random play, it works but poorly. I have owned my X5ii since it was released about 5 years ago and I have used it (almost exclusively in random play mode) pretty much every day since purchasing it. I can tell you that over those 5 years I have heard a multitude of songs repeatedly while not hearing a much larger magnitude of songs at all. In addition to repeating songs my unit has a consistent habit of focussing on a few artists and randomly playing their songs all the while slipping in a few totally random songs.

In addition I have had periodic freeze up's (the last time was a couple of months ago). Re-booting won't fix it as it just freezes up upon start-up. I usually need to go through various gyrations but my latest method seems to work fairly well. First, remove the microSD cards. Second, re-boot and wait for a successful startup. Third, re-insert the cards and re-boot again. Fourth, update the library. Finally it works again. By the way, random play seems to work fairly well after one of the freeze-up's as I begin to hear many songs that have never played on my X5ii. However, sadly eventually it reverts back to it's "not so random", random play.

The not so random, random play isn't a deal breaker but I'll tell you it's damn annoying. Equally annoying is reporting this issue with FiiO only to have them acknowledge that they were aware of the problem and stating that they are planning to fix it an up-coming firmware update. It never happened because FiiO decided to not fix the problem, instead they decided to abandon support for the X5ii altogether.

So now years later we have the M9 with it's own glitches. FiiO philosophy apparently hasn't changed much.

Of course there are many different points of view about the M9. To me the hardware is fantastic, and a really great sound. Bluetooth is pretty good for me. LDAC and APTX-HD work well whether transmitting or receiving. Works well with my HiFi. I do find a problem having the higher bitrates of LDAC and Wifi running at the same time though. Luckily Spotify runs very well on the M9. Virgin WiFi here in the UK is fast and reaches into the corners of the house where I live. Balanced output means I don't need an amp. Plenty of power for my balanced cables. Also I can now cast directly to my Arcam WiFi Dac since a hacked app. The problem is that I trust the others who have complained. There may be QC problems with the Samsung chips because the general hardware is good. So I empathise with those who have problems and FiiO should listen. There should also be an audiobook player and a podcast app....simple. Why...a good few people ask for them, and it is not that complicated to supply those. The FiiO app has lot's of complaints and has search problems, although for my use it is OK. I would give the hardware 9 out of 10, but FiiO support 5 out of 10. Had the M9 had a little more built in memory it would be superb. The same for my M6. Would I buy it again if I knew what I know now.......yes. I use it every day.

I have decided against buying he M9 due to all of the problems being reported. I auditioned the M11 earlier today (Headfoneshop, Toronto) and did a fair amount of research on it yesterday. I decided to buy it. Fingers crossed.

I don’t think you need to cross your fingers. I have been using the M11 since it’s UK release date. The only issue I have had is the occasional freeze which mandates a quick press of the power button. It’s truly excellent. I have about 1300 albums stored on an sd card and it remains, quick, responsive,a delight to use. Pound for pound it’s a deal breaker, really is.
I also have the M9. I use it for what it was designed for,not for streaming. And it’s a lovely device.

Hey thanks for your reassurance. The M11 is one beautiful unit and is it ever a massive upgrade compared to my X5ii with respect to sound and user interface.

Use it for what it was designed for, not for streaming??

This is a direct quote from the FiiO website regarding the M9:

"When developing the M9, we at FiiO saw that there wasn't any one player that combined all of the functions people want. Was there a player that could transmit the HWA/aptx/aptx HD/LDAC lossless Bluetooth codecs, even when used as a USB DAC? What about something that also contained a highly optimized audio circuit for excellent sound quality? Did any players also give the user an experience worthy of a flagship, capable of many features including Wi-Fi music streaming all in a slick interface? We sought to change that with the M9 - which does all of this and more."

They specifically say it was designed for streaming among other things! The problem with the M9 is that the quality control on some units was terrible and now that the M11 is out FiiO seem to have dropped support for it like a hot potato. Several posts in here have said that they promised a firmware update several weeks/months ago and by all accounts people are still waiting for it to arrive.

I really think you have bought an excellent dap. I have 6 daps..don’t ask why..and this is just about my favourite. Actually the x7ii is my favourite but only because it can be docked and connected to active speakers via optical. In most other respects this is actually a better device. I was impressed from second one. It was easy to set up,screen size and resolution is a delight, lack of google play easily got round,Bluetooth first class, sound sublime. The amp is powerful too,it drives most of my headphones with ease. I often pair it with Sennheiser 600s which have 150 ohm impedance and it coasts without effort.

Yes, that is true. I accept that,I should have been more careful in how I phrased what I was trying to say. It was marketed primarily as a music player that can stream. Well,it does use streaming apps well but there are issues. And I will not defend fiio for the lack of updates, there is no defence. Your point is fair. I use it for playing my own library and for its Bluetooth capability and it never lets me down, but I totally accept your point.

For a couple of days and right now my M9 says there is a firmware update. It says "Whether to upgrade to 1.0.5.zipVersion?". When I click "update" nothing happens. So I click Cancel update and carry on as normal. But it keeps coming up. So Que FiiO? FiiO what is going on???????

That would be the next update. Mine is still 1.0.4 and says it’s the latest version. Guess it’s coming soon.

hello. The new ios fiio link does not connect at all with version 1.04 through the stated wifi or bluetooth. am I missing something or do I need to wait for the next update or something? I tried to connect to wifi address as well as bluetooth address. after I put in wifi address it just says disconnecting and shuts off.

You need the update. It sort of works following update on M11 but only via WiFi,not Bluetooth for iOS.
