I have recently purchased the M23 and am quite happy with it as a DAP, to be honest (caveat: I had been using an Apple iPod Classic 160GB…). What surprises me is the somewhat negative animosity towards „FiiO sound signature“; is there any more information on this? Also, I thought the THX circuit is a third party developed circuit design; is there any material to read up on the postulated „limitations“ (e.g. lack of imaging in terms of soundstage)? Thanks so much in advance.

In this hobby there is a lot written presented as fact that has its foundation in peoples imagination far more than in reality.

Hi everyone. Just picked up my M23 in Hong Kong. Running it in. So far the experience has been positive. I mainly stream from Tidal and Apple music. Power yes, detail retrieval and ease of use are the highlights as of now. UI is more easier to use than my SR35 :relaxed:

What made you choose the m23? What other daps did you consider before deciding on the m23? I am coming from fiio m11. Very massive sound improvement from the m11.

I wanted a good Android based DAP for sheer convenience and ease of use. Fiio is a brand i use regularly and im comfortable with. I also checked out the M23 at the Canjam Singapore recently and was impressed. I did try out the Astell and Kern SP3000 and the DX320. Loved the SP3000 but since i already have the SR35 i didnt go for it presently. the M23 in SS felt solid and had a lot of good things going in its favour. I somehow didnt like the music feel on the DX320 or 260 and felt that the M23 was far better. Will post more later after a proper listening. Only hoping that they upgrade to Android 12 soon :relaxed:

For me the biggest game changer coming to the M23 from Cowon Plenue D2 has been the desktop mode. Goodbye regular charging, obviously I mostly use the M23 at home. The other biggest thing has been the extra power. I feel like I'm able to get more out of my HD660s with the M23 even though the Plenue drove them very well too, but it sounds to me I'm hearing a bit more details and the bass kicks harder. Also, the OS has been rock solid and I haven't encountered a single crash.

I have an m11 pro and use it mostly as a usb dac with a laptop at work. The desktop mode would make me thinking about upgrade. Is it possible to use it as a usb dac in desktop mode with a computer power output, or do you need a fast charger? I am not interested in "super hifi mode" or how they call it (having Andromedas), but in desktop mode only in order not to waste the battery. Is there someone who had an opportunity to compare m11 pro and m23? Is it the sound quality difference worth of an upgrade?

Has anyone experienced a weird high-pitched whine-like noise when using M23 plugged as USB-DAC that starts then goes away on its own?
Encountered it with Rn6 (never had or noticed it with Kr5) and I'm wondering what might be causing it. For what it's worth, I was always running super high gain and both usb-c plugged in when it occured, currently testing if it occurs when playing music on M23 directly and it seems to be fine so far.

To be honest, I'm a bit disappointed with the lack of support for this device from FiiO so far, the promised android 12 update is in limbo with no ETA apparently, and none of the issues I outlined in my post almost half a year ago have been addressed in any way.

Having the M23 plugged into a PC (I believe) and a power supply and set to super high gain mode and listening with IEM sounds like a recipe for undesirable noise.

Why not just turn the gain down to a more IEM appropriate setting, the noise may very well disappear.

Regarding firmware updates to fix your list of concerns and the Android 12 update issue, I imagine the two are intrinsically linked. They are unlikely to spend resources on firmware updates for Android 10 when they are working on replacing that operating system.

I tested lower gain settings as well, that's the problem - there's no noise in either mode normally, just those short whines. I couldn't reproduce it when not plugged to PC so it might as well be the PC. My other IEM pair (FiR Kr5 which is more sensitive) doesn't have this problem either. Might try a different source tomorrow, just to isolate it, I have a BTR7 sitting there doing nothing anyway.

I'll ask the obvious question...have you tried different chargers (you said you tried different cables).
