I swore to wait until "rumors with legs" about the next Sony DAPs started hitting the interwebs before I'd seriously consider a new DAP, but... I almost hope the price is above my budget so I won't be tempted this early in 2021, hahahaha.

Would also be interested to see how this compares in SQ to the current line up. Though I'm a m11 Pro user ... so waiting for the m15 Plus and 17 announcements!

$499 USD and you'd sell them like hot cakes (the aluminium version at least).

I'm tired of wildly unreasonable priced DAPs with low-mid end phone specs and measurable performance below other (much cheaper) DAC/AMP portable alternatives.

Really hope FiiO surprises and knocks out of the park making a new direction with this product...

...499 ... never....

That was the price of the original M11 launched two years ago...

For 500 bucks you can get an Android phone with similar build quality (except for the dedicated buttons), FAR better screen, SoC, RAM quantity, storage, camera modules, sensors and a modem. Sure, you won't get the dedicated audio hardware, but six of one and half a dozen of the other.

The only reason why manufacturers can charge stratospheric amounts for devices like this is because there is a demand of people willing to create a whole mythology around different sonic qualities and pay for it, when we should demand more useful and realistic aspects such as better software, features like parametric EQ system-wide, longer support times, etc.

Scarcity of AKM dac chips isn't gonna help the cause.

Fair point, but they can use other manufacturer (or different DAC model of the same one) that meet the requirements for balanced design, supported formats and so on.

A well implemented DAC design would sound equal to the best DAC implementation in the market regarding to our hearing threshold, there's no audible difference between DACs unless they are utterly bad implemented. The same applies for most solid state AMP modules.

System wide PEQ, on the other hand, would open the door to infinite possibilities to adjust the sound to our liking.

Until people buy using their heads instead of their wallets, yes, I'll keep dreaming... :triportsad:
Based on your join date, you've been around the game plenty long enough to know that ship has sailed a long, long time ago. FWIW, I've had a different epiphany since coming back to this hobby ~10 months ago after a 5+ year absence. There's a hard ceiling on what I'll spend on battery-powered audio devices. But, I accept that prices will always go up, and as someone who doesn't stream, going forward I'll always be paying for features I don't want/need unless I settle on a non-DAP solution (I am kicking around ideas, believe me).

Anyway, I am still curious to see how FiiO handles the rollout of the 11+ given they'll be changing horses mid-stream (AKM dac to ESS, I believe, mid-production!). I'm here for the horror show if nothing else. Gonna be some mad & confused customers, methinks.

For the interested but less knowledgeable - what would be the salient differences between the AKM and ESS?

Heh, audibly? Probably not much <<<ducks<>>>, LOL. But tell a group of serious hobbyists that one guy got "A", and another guy that he's getting "B", and watch the scrum like crazy shoppers on Black Friday.
