I love reviews like this. Dave specifically called out what he liked more about the original K11, and did it in such a straightforward way that I am convinced I would prefer the R2R version. He did not try to convey his preferences as some absolute judgement.
Holy moly, just received my Fiio K11 R2R, what a prefect pairing with the HD620S to my ears (haven't tried my other cans yet), I still EQ to fine tune but I can reduce the number of filters and the gain on the ones staying. In fact, I could do without EQ too. The soundstage and imaging are also improved with the K11 R2R running on SE (compared to the K11 OG).
Now that I have spent some time pairing the K11 R2R with the HD600, I have noticed using high gain sounds better than medium gain for the HD600.
High gain at 30 volume vs medium gain at 50, I have Windows volume mixer for K11 R2R & Spotify at max, while Spotify in app volume at around 50%, and an EAPO preamp -4dB gain. (I know for best sound I should max out all Windows and app volumes and use the amp to adjust, but I'm lazy and prefer to adjust in app as it's just easier.)
Is it expected that high gain can drive higher impedance headphones better even at low volume compared with medium gain at "medium" volume with plenty of headroom still?

I just put this exact set-up together as a second rig and completely agree with you. The S2 is capable of scaling higher, but you’re getting so much euphonic satisfaction and enough detail with a simple tube roll.

Nice! Yeah, i swapped out the stock tubes for the Psvane Art series. I would not mind trying out the Horizon series as a slightly more neutral option, if it can keep up with the Art series wrt technical performance. For a SE DAC though, I feel like the K11 is an excellent choice to feed a simple tube amp and won't need an upgrade unless I go deep into that part of the hobby.
