Guys the golden question: FT3 or HD600/650/660s series? I heard a lot of "FT3 punches above its price bracket" but then "its not better than HD600" so very controversial comments. If its not better than the HD6x0 then its NOT punches above its price bracket i think, logical. So is it better overall or still the sennheisers own the league?

I tested it two times. I made an longer reviewer where i came to the conclusion, it is absolutely well worth its price but i disagree that it punches beyond its price bracket and also i tested it a second time (after selling my MDR-Z1R, looking for an replacement) when comparing it to the FT5 and other headphones like the VOID and so on.

And of course, i am just one person with one opinion and i also don't know your taste and what you are looking for.

But after testing it again, i came to the same conclusion. It is an excellent Headphone that build quality wise is excellent and sound quality wise on the level of its competitors.

I also tested the HD660S2 and tons of other Headphones (like the Audeze LCD-X, Final D8000, HD820 (for the like 10th time), Yamaha YH-5000SE and so on) and in the end bought the HD 490 Pro with the MDR-MV1 going in as a very close second.

But i was looking for an very transparent and harmonic/organic sound that gets me as close to the original recording as absolutely possible. You might look for something different.

I looking for the same, transparent, very true sounding stuff. A little context: i have a HD600, 660s, fiio FT5, and my latest purchase the Arya Stealth. My main as u could guess, the Arya now, and the second is the FT5 what i like very much. What i searching for is the perfect not too pricey movie headphone as i watching movies with hps, but not with my main hps if its makes sense. So for now the HD600 or the 660s is my movie heaphone (may sell them if i find better), so the question is if the FT3 any better for movies than the senns?

Other thing is that i curious why u ended up with the HD490 pro, i heard from here and there that its not any better than just a HD600/650. It was a comfort factor or its really sounding that good?

If you want transparent, than neither FT3 nor FT5 are your thing. They are both colored, the FT5 more than the FT3 but both a colored.

I listened to the 600 and 660S2. The 660S2 is colored, without doubt. But its made that way, so thats not an issue. The 600 is just old.

The 490 Pro is the 600 but improved in every single aspect and for sure more transparent. Its not that the HD600 is bad, but its just old and they did not have the technology to make what they wanted to make back then.

When Sennheiser divided their business into Pro Hardware and Consumer Hardware, they kept the 600 into Consumer and developed a new Pro one, the HD 490 Pro and it is an improvement in every single aspect and closer to transparent than any other Headphone i have ever heard. So the 490 Pro is the successor to the 600 and the only reason to change the name was to distinguish further/harder from their consumer hardware. So officially, the 490 Pro is the only Reference Studio Monitor that Sennheiser offers.

So if your highest priority is utmost transparency and getting to the original recording as absolutely possible, that is the HD 490 Pro (if you want an Over Ear Headphone).

FT3 and FT5 both sound very good, but both are colored.

Just got the Fiio JT1 and man i am loving this thing. Rocking this song and sounds pretty amazing for the price. Also have the ATH WS1100 and that was around 260$ and the bass in that dances around my ears but the JT1 is not far behind and does the same. So i guess the JT1 is also semi open cause it slams almost the same. And give it a phat 8 and the WS1100 a 9.

Sorry for barging in, I'd be curious if you could expand little bit in the differences in these two headphones how they compare like. I'm still slightly bit interested in giving WS1100 a try based on reviews on them but they are a bit harder to find these days. Just bought the FiiO JT1 out of interest as they are so cheap and love bang-for-buck headphones. I'm still looking for replacements for my M-Audio Q40 (that are discontinued) that I've been using like probably the last 15 years or so and cured my upgradeitis after trying several expensier alternatives but ultimately always went back to the Q40. Saw the FiiO JT1 had a very similar response curve like the Q40 so that's a good start (main difference is FiiO seems to have a peak lower in the upper-mid range while Q40 peaks around the typical 10kHz spot which is probably the reason female vocals are being explained as somewhat in-your-face on the FiiO):

The thing is I find it hard to find headphones which equally good punchy/tight controlled bass like the Q40. I don't want it to appear wet and bloated but rather punchy and impactful hard hit. The Ultrasone Signature X have that kind of bass but they are not the cleanest in the treble and I find could have slightly better depth to it in the soundstage and then they also creak quite a lot.

The FIIO FT1 cups are made from American black walnut originating from high-latitude regions in North America. The wood’s smooth grain unique to each piece and delicate texture truly showcase its natural beauty. This highly dense solid wood also helps to reduce cavity resonance effectively and minimizes standing waves.

There are 3 days left before the Closed-Back Dynamic Headphones FT1 comes out. Let’s stay tuned!

Technology of Paper Making
The FIIO FT1’s diaphragm primarily consists of carefully selected paper wood fibers, based on 90-year-old spruce wood from Northern Europe. Northern European spruce wood undergoes a series of processes, including soaking, cooking, and beating, to create specific pulp. To meet acoustic toughness requirements, a precise proportion of carbon fiber material is added. The diaphragm then undergoes another round of baking and molding, resulting in a final thickness of approximately 0.1mm, lightweight and tough.

Art of Sound
Different from conventional chemically synthesized diaphragms, nanowood fiber composite diaphragm exhibits excellent high-frequency extension and transient response, resulting in clean, precise sound with clear imaging tone, and providing you with the unique sweet, rich, and high-density mid-frequency vocals uniquely existing in paper diaphragms. It is as if the elegant aesthetics of the “paper” driver translates perfectly into beautiful sound.

The U-shaped sound damping tube specifically developed for the FIIO FT1 not only enhances passive noise attenuation but also allows sound energy to pass through a specific length and angle of the flute, increasing air viscosity and reducing cavity resonance frequency. This further enhances bass extension.

1. American black walnut solid-wood cups

The FIIO FT1 cups are made from carefully selected FAS-grade American black walnut*. The wood’s smooth grain unique to each piece and delicate texture truly showcase its natural beauty. This highly dense solid wood also helps to reduce cavity resonance effectively and minimizes standing waves.

* American black walnut, originating from high-latitude regions in North America, is renowned for its beautiful grain and smooth, delicate texture. FAS grade is the highest quality wood and is commonly used in luxury products such as yachts, high-end cars, and custom furniture. It is a relatively rare, precious wood.

2. Nanowood fiber composite diaphragm

The FIIO FT1’s diaphragm primarily consists of carefully selected paper wood fibers, based on 90-year-old spruce wood from Northern Europe. European spruce is a top-grade raw material for musical instruments and fiber products, known for its clear sound and natural tone. Mature Northern European spruce wood undergoes a series of processes, including soaking, cooking, and beating, to create specific pulp. To meet acoustic toughness requirements, a precise proportion of carbon fiber material is added. The diaphragm then undergoes another round of baking and molding, resulting in a final thickness of approximately 0.1mm, lightweight and tough. To fully unleash the acoustic performance of the nanowood fibers, light PU material with high internal resistance is utilized for the suspension gasket, improving diaphragm compliance, enhancing low-frequency elasticity, and strengthening the density of vocals from the source of the sound, thus resulting in warm, lush vocals.

3. Closed-back design

The FT1, as FIIO’s first closed-back over-ear headphones, incorporates a variety of features that specifically enhance the closed-back listening experience. A series of sound insulation components in the FT1 effectively reduce ambient noise, including external voices and environmental sounds, by up to 26dB. Whether you’re commuting, editing recordings, working in an office, or gaming, the FT1 allows you to immerse yourself in a high-fidelity audio world. It is a truly great-sounding, all-rounder set of headphones.

4. U-shaped sound damping tube for enhanced noise attenuation

The U-shaped sound damping tube specifically developed for the FIIO FT1 not only enhances passive noise attenuation but also allows sound energy to pass through a specific length and angle of the flute, increasing air viscosity and reducing cavity resonance frequency. This further enhances bass extension. You’ll distinctly feel the air movement and the focused power of drums and strings.

5. 32Ω high-sensitivity design

The FIIO FT1 aims to provide users with a high-quality HiFi experience across various usage scenarios. To achieve this, the FT1 features a low impedance design of 32Ω and boasts acoustic sensitivity metrics of 113dB/Vrms@1kHz (equivalent to 98dB/mW@1kHz). This significantly reduces the demand for driving power, allowing you to effortlessly enjoy excellent sound quality.

6. Ball bearing slide rail headband

To make it more portable and lightweight, the FT1 headband features high-quality ball bearing slides, significantly enhancing the headband’s durability. You will feel the precision and sophistication of the mechanical design every time you adjust the headband. Additionally, compared to similar products, the FT1 offers 12 notches of extended adjustment range to accommodate various head sizes. The part of the headband in contact with the head is made of suede leather material for a soft and comfortable wearing experience.

7. Premium headphone storage bag included

Included with the FT1 is a premium headphone storage bag, crafted with the same materials and techniques used by top French brands, offering a refined and stylish appearance, rarely seen in its class but undoubtedly useful for protection.

8. 2 silver-plated oxygen-free copper cables included

The brand-new FT1 comes with two headphone cables – terminated in 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced plugs. Both cables are identically made using an oxygen-free copper-plated silver wire base with 392 wires, are of 24AWG thickness, and are 1.5 meters long. This makes the FT1 widely compatible with many audio devices, as you can easily switch between the cables.
