Hello all,

I am trying to play my JBL 306p active monitors on my FiiO E17, but when I connect the monitors to the E17 with it connected through USB I only hear audio from one monitor. I have also tried connecting the E17 from the onboard line-out and audio is still coming from one channel. If I just connect my monitors directly to onboard audio, both channels work perfectly.

Current setup: JBL 306p's>double XLR to 3.5mm cable>PC onboard audio(line out)

What would be the cheapest way to get this to work?

Have you tried connecting without using XLR?
Getting the FiiO L7 adapter might solve the issue.

I don't have any other cables to use with my monitors. The only options are XLR and TRS. The FiiO L7 adapter isn't sold anywhere online, so I'm out of luck.

I'm not sure if a double TRS to 3.5mm would work seeing as how the double XLR to 3.5mm isn't working on the E17.

Would the E17 be able to detect the monitors if I used a TRS cable since it will be going from unbalanced signal to unbalanced?

Would it be better if I bought a Schiit Modi 3 and put my E17 aside for portable use with other devices? Or would their be a way to use the E17 as an amp and the Schiit Modi 3 as a DAC?

It's not about the E17 knowing what's downstream from it, it will send a line signal regardless.

The question is whether the signal is getting there.

Did you switch out which XLR goes to either side?

If you do and now the other side works, the cable is broken.

If it doesn't then it's either the JBL or the Fiio.

I'd flip the XLRs first and make sure both the monitors are working. If it works then sure get the Modi3.

As I've stated, both monitors work perfectly connected to my motherboard's onboard audio. Adding in the FiiO E17 is where only one monitor is working, so currently I'm not utilizing the E17 until I can get it working with the monitors, but it looks like I'm not going to be able to do that with this setup. My E17 plays Left and Right channels correctly on cheap speakers that I've previously owned with a 3.5mm cable. I feel like the XLR to 3.5mm is what is giving the E17 issues detecting possibly. Only thing I can think of is getting a pair of TRS to 3.5mm cables or FiiO E09k(except I don't need an amp, so it would be a waste).

I'll probably go with getting a Modi 3 and some TRS to RCA cables.

Don't forget either the Sys or Magni3 so you can control the output from the Modi3.

Both the motherboard on-board audio and the FiiO E17 output an unbalanced signal, which is the common connection for consumer audio.
XLR and TRS (1/4") plugs are for a balanced signal (more professional setup)
On the back of the JBL LSR306p, there is an input sensitivity switch (check manual, page 11).
For an un-balanced signal, the switch needs to be set to -10dBV (what you have)
For a balanced signal, set to +4dBu

For a un-balanced signal, for a connection to the JBL LSR306p, you want to use 1/4" TS plug (not TRS plug).
This Hosa cable is the one you should be using.
