I want to eventually pick up some open backs to use when I get some alone time at home. Haven't had an opportunity to demo any locally. I have listened to a few on YouTube via Z's sound demos. Obviously it's hard to really tell from those, but the two that really caught my ears were the Phillips fidelio X2, and the Hifiman HE4XX. Then there's the tempting Phillips shp9500. I would like to experience planar magnetic headphones, and I thought the HE4XX sounded sweet. I listen primarily to rock n roll and love them mids. I also appreciate a solid drum kick. For those who own or have owned these, can you please explain why you liked a particular pair over the others? I'm open to other suggestions as well.

The X2 has a big, big soundstage and trenchant bass. It is a good combo. I own the HE400i and HE400S and I absolutely love the midrange on both. The HE4XX I have not heard but the mids should be quite similar. The bass on the HE400S is better than the HE400i, which is brighter. Not sure which way the HE4XX swings on that one. Bottom line is HiFiMAN midrange is glorious.
Have not heard the SHP9500 in awhile but it has in my memory a very nice stage and good detail and separation. It is a good headphone but I believe the 400 series HiFiMANs are superior. Just my takes and YMMV--as always.

AKG K7XX new for $199 or used for $140. I've heard it is better than the X2 in terms of clarity and bass extension and is more neutral.
I got rid of my HD600 when I got the K7XX. I think it is a little better.

Right on. This was quite helpful. Glorious mids sounds well, glorious! What is trenchant bass? I'm very tempted to get in on the HE4XX drop. Plus I think they are a sexy set of cans, and I really want to experience the planar magnetic world. I see a large, deep rabbit hole ahead of me.

Are these cans power hungry? I forgot to mention that I don't have an amp. I will be listening directly from my LG V30

Ah yes--the rabbit hole. Always the rabbit hole. The X2 bass is promm-in-nent. Extended. Impressive. For an open headphone it is pretty amazing. So, if bass is important to you, you will probably be better off with the X2 than one of the HiFiMANs. Just something to think about. HiFiMAN mids are superior, though. No doubt about it, IMO.

What sources (or DAC/amp) will you be plugging the headphones into?
I would be temped to go for the Hifiman HE4XXs.

So your going to plug the headphones directly into a smartphone (LG V30).

Yes, my smartphone with a built-in quad dac
"built in quad DAC"?
Assuming you mean a quad core CPU?
(which has nothing to do with audio quality)

This was not my experience. I think the x2 murdered the AKG 7xx and 712 in terms of quantity of bass, and to get the AKGs to volume match the x2 for bass, the treble bump made me want to pluck my eyes out from their sockets. I love the K712s dearly, and owned them for about 4 years, but bass was not their strong suit. Mids were solid, stage was big, imaging was decent but inaccurate (from my game playing experience). The x2 had a pretty big stage too, but was more heavy than was comfortable for me (akgs easily rank among the most comfy headphones I've ever worn), and I felt the AKGs were more detailed.

One big problem, the AKGs were kind of ineffecient, especially compared to the x2.

I dearly love the Hifiman 400 series, and have the 400i, 400s, and 4xx. I think the 400i scales best of the three with better amps and dacs, but the 400s and 4xx are more efficient and sound better with entry level or lower power units. I think the 400s sound is a bit more laid-back and pleasant, generally, but I think the warmth bloats the bass a tiny smidge. The 4xx has solid bass, but to my ears was a bit brighter (reminds me of an entry level 560, with a bit more bass), and the mids felt a bit hollowed out compared to the 400i and 400s. I generally recommend the 400i unless you know whether you prefer warm or bright to neutral, or if you want a big stage, which isn't a weakness of the line, but it's no strength either.

I actually would also forward the Hifiman's, but would also throw out the hd6xx, but amping might be a problem for that. Another planar option in the price bracket is the Fostex T20/40/50rp series. I rather enjoy mine, but again, need an amp. Though, for the price of the t50 or he4xx, you could probably get an amp with them and still be under the 250 mark.

Perhaps you should Google it
So the LG V30 comes with a Sabre ES9218P "quad" DAC (I do like the Sabre DAC chip in my NFB-11.28)
Looks like the ES9218P DAC chip comes with something built in to drive headphones (built in headphone amplifier).
Not sure how the "quad" feature (whatever that is) improves audio quality.

Thanks for the info. I was leaning towards the 3 I posted for efficiency reasons among others. I almost pulled the trigger on T20rp a few times, but got mixed responses about how my V30 would handle them. I do have a small portable amp. Fiio E6 I believe, but I haven't used it since I got my V30
