Even though I own a pair of UE10s, I have for the past 3 months been using my Shure SE530s for portable use exclusively. While I admit to liking the UE10s sound quality more, there are several reasons I have chosen this route. Firstly, the Shures are just so much more comfortable. I had 8 refits on the UE10s and after a while I got it to a respectable comfort but I conceded that the hard acrylic would never be "comfortable" to my ears. Even soft acrylic is not all that comfortable to me, I own a pair of Sensaphonics 2XS......terrible sound quality, the worst I've ever heard. Anyway. I've been through a lot of universal monitors and I admit from the ones I've heard, the Shure SE530s are the best all rounder. I had gotten quite used to the sound and was quite pleased. No they weren't as good as my MDR R10, not even as good as the UE10s but they were good enough for portable compressed listening with the ipod...

Anyway, the other day a friend lent me his iPod. After about 10 minutes of listening I began to wonder why the hell my monitors sounded so much better on his ipod. I began to check if he any EQ settings on. He did, he had the Electronic EQ setting on. He explained to me that liked having that setting on for his muddy car speakers. I couldn't believe how perfect this setting was with the SE530s. I have EQed the SE530s with rockbox before, but I truly hate the rockbox firmware so I gave up that luxury. I have tried EQing my ipod before, but I always skipped over the word Electronic (stupidly) cause i was convinced it would not suit my needs just because of the name "electronic". Most of what I listen to is classical music so the thought of electronic was just not cool with me. Well, every time I put the treble boost on I found the monitors to sound nasal, every time i tried the classical setting, I found the treble to be nasal and the bottom to be super muddy. The Electronic setting is perfect for these monitors, it brings up the very very bottom bass just a tad which relieves the low mids of that cluttered feel because the highs start to glisten with no shrill or nasal quality. It's truly an astonishing change, even better than my customized EQing on rockbox.

I would be interested in some other opinions of people trying this setting on their 6G ipod with these monitors.

I have used the UE Triple-fi's, UE10s, Ety Er4P, Shure 420, Westone UM2, and a few other lesser IEMs, and the SE530 with the electronic setting on the Ipod, is without a doubt the best I've heard from an IEM, it sets the new standard for me.

Just tried it but I prefer the non-Eq sound. Also, my AE-2 is fed through the dock-out, bypassing the EQ. Without amp you may have a point.

Been trying to find this thread for 10minutes now!

WOW.

Yeah the "Electronic" EQ setting sounds fantastic to me also. I listen to ipod > lineout > ibasso D2 or Laptop > USB > D2. If i try going back to flat or "off" for EQ i can only describe it sounds like i have a sponge between my ears and the se530's.

I thank you DavidMahler a truly amazing transformation of my se530's

I've been listening like this since yesterday with 2 different opamp setups.

@Singapura, nope i think your wrong there. Even when using lineout from your ipod it doesn't bypass the ipod EQ'ing. Well atleast with my 5.5 ipod video. Again, the sound difference of "off", and "Electronic" is amazing...for all genres

I encourage anyone to just force yourself to try the setting for atleast 1 day. Then switch back. At first, yes...it sounds a little bright. But after a day you'll realise its not "bright" but "brighter"... and better. The bass difference is also fantastic.

I don't know if you've ever used "Bass Reducer" but it also works quite good. I too find bass on e500 excessive and muddy as you said but this tames it a bit and it also let's high breath. I'll definitely give "Electronic" a try though.

yep thats exactly what i think. If you go into itunes and check what it does to the EQ when you change to the electronic setting you can see it vastly increases both bottom end, top end and a little in the middle for vocals... it sounds great. completely removes any muddy sound -which i only realised was there after changing back to no EQ

Electronic setting definitely brings out dynamic part of my e500. And the bass doesn't sound muddy anymore, it's rather full and round. The thing I like the most is how it clarifies the high. It's much brighter but not to the point where it sounds harsh and edgy. It sounds more natural and smooth.

I should say, although it improves the muddy-ness nature of e500, it sort of feels like the bass is too emphasized and overpowering for classical.

If I can only bring down the lowest bar a little bit...
