Who do you think will take the F1 driver's championship this year? There are five more races and these seven have a mathematical chance at taking it.

7th. Coulthard: 36 points behind. Not really himself this year. With Kimi having a realistic shot at the title he will have to drive for him for the rest of the season.

6th. Alonso: Great talent, probably one of the future superstars of F1. The Renault has one of the best chassis, but overall is no match for the big three.

5th. Barrichello: Clearly the number two at Ferrari. As long as he drives for the same team as Schumacher he'll never win the championship.

4th. Ralf Schumacher: Some really strong performances from him this year, and BMW finally seems to have found their speed. His biggest problem is probably his own teammate. Equally fast, won't ever accept second place.

3rd. Raikonnen: Fast, talented, still makes too many mistakes. That McLaren is still using last season's car is now beginning to really hurt them.

2nd. Montoya: Fast, agressive, finally in a car he can win races with. By the end of the season he'll be hot on Michael's heels, who know's what if the BMW would have worked right from the beginning...

1st. Michael Schumacher: Best driver, best car, Bridgestone seems to have had their act together again at Silverstone. It's going to be close, but he'll come out on top.

I voted for Juan Montoya but I couldn't beleive it when he admitted in the post race interview at France that he backed off instead of challenging Ralf after their final pitstops.

But no doubt it is going to be exciting to see who does win.

I'm thinking that the season will not be decided until the last race of the season at Suzuka. I'd say between JPM and M. Schumacher and pit stop strategy will win the race/season. Michael won Suzuka last year and JPM was fourth.

JPM takes it, M. Schumacher has a late puncture and finishes seventh, just in the points. First turn crash took out Raikkonen, Barrichello, and others. Renault was second and third (Truli and Alonzo) behind JPM for a good part after the start if you can believe it. Hockenheim top eight:

1 Juan Pablo Montoya Williams BMW 1h28m48.769s
2 David Coulthard McLaren Mercedes + 65.459s
3 Jarno Trulli Renault + 69.060s
4 Fernando Alonso Renault + 69.344s
5 Olivier Panis Toyota + 1 lap
6 Cristiano Da Matta Toyota + 1 lap
7 Michael Schumacher Ferrari + 1 lap
8 Jenson Button BAR Honda + 1 lap

Drivers standings to date:

Michael Schumacher Ferrari 71
Juan Pablo Montoya Williams BMW 65
Kimi Raikkonen McLaren Mercedes 62
Ralf Schumacher Williams BMW 53
Rubens Barrichello Ferrari 49
Fernando Alonso Renault 44
David Coulthard McLaren Mercedes 41

Team standings:

Ferrari 120
Williams BMW 118
McLaren Mercedes 103
Renault 66

michael doesn't really have experience, he came from nowhere, and I think he wins not only because of Ferrari's crazy-ass cars, but because he takes advantage of the fact that it's fast, he just blows ahead in races, he doesn't actually race with the other drivers, he's just a ****-head, I think some other experienced drivers should put him in his place (derek bell...)

Nah, don't see how that can be. His first drivers championship was with Beneton for crying out loud. I actually think he's been holding back since it's been so easy for him to win. He'll kick it into gear before the end.

hey, you're probably right, most of the formula 1 drivers are basically n00b's compared to endurance drivers, but they're good, no doubt, but michael is probably at the top of them, I think jp is better, but if he was with ferrari, ooh, they'd always have one at top two!!, I like cart racing better actually, it's more interesting=actual competition, I think that's why a lot of hardcore racing fans are turned off by f1, the lack of real competition is amazing, it's like only the top 3 actually are recognized as making good moves or anything, generally better racing is lower in the ranks, about 6-15th positions (in gt or other things).

michael has loads of experience...when he won the title in 94 and 95 he had an inferior car...the williams was the best car...in 96 when gerhard berger took over in benneton (and michael moved to ferrari) he thought he had a excellent car to race with...when he started racing it then he too reliased what a great driver michael...he just couldn't drive it the way michael did...

that's one of the main differences between michael and barichello...barichello needs a really good car to excel whereas michael doesn't...

as for the WDC, i think it's gonna be close between JPM and Michael...man is williams fast this year...

It would be very hard to bet against Big Schuey, though there is a pretty good chance someone or other can sneak ahead.

But the BMW M-Power rules! BMW-Williams should win the constructor's championship.

of course there is less overtaking in "professional" motorracing, the racers are pros and are always on the limit, with the lesser ranks those guys aren't on the limit all the time so there are plenty of oppurtunities to pass. also those professionals would make less errors so less chance of passing.

i guess montoya is a **** head too?

you really need to appreciate how good drivers these guys are.

endurance drivers are lesser in skill than f1, there are a few f1 rejects in endurance racing.

Last race: Well maybe we can keep this thread going until Suzuka. Here is who finished in the points a couple weeks ago in Hockenheim. Guess Michael had a puncture and that first turn crash was pretty exciting. Interestingly, Ralf Shumacher was held to blame for the crash and was initially given a penalty to start Hungary 10 places back, but his appeal got him a fine instead.

1 Juan Pablo Montoya Williams BMW 1h28m48.769s
2 David Coulthard McLaren Mercedes + 65.459s
3 Jarno Trulli Renault + 69.060s
4 Fernando Alonso Renault + 69.344s
5 Olivier Panis Toyota + 1 lap
6 Cristiano Da Matta Toyota + 1 lap
7 Michael Schumacher Ferrari + 1 lap
8 Jenson Button BAR Honda + 1 lap

Hungarian Grand Prix

Edit: ALONSO takes pole in Hungary!
