I want to use the echo or another external card but still be able to use the speakers on my laptop for times when I dont want to use headphones. Can I still do that somehow without buying external speakers?

Okay, if I understand you correctly....

If you unplug/detach the soundcard, the laptop should revert back to its internal soundcard and speakers. So, yes it's possible. Just remove the soundcard.

I use an Echo Indigo on my laptop. When I want to listen to music I just plug it in and it takes over. When I want to use the internal sound, I simply hit the "safely remove device" icon in the system tray. When the blue light goes off I pull the card and "baddabing" it's done. The internal sound takes over. Very simple procedure. No conflicts whatsoever.
