Well, rather than doing my big list of australian bands that no one will like (weird taste, even for this site)...
I'm going to say Bertie Blackman (Secrets and Lies) as the only option.
Simply because it's new, and it's good alternative and I want people to check it out.

Outside of that, theres a group I heard down at a pub recently, Void. Grabbed their album yesterday. Fantastic. Technically, these guys are amazing. Really. If you like jazz, or funk you should grab their stuff.

Artist(s) that truly exemplify(ies) the heart of the Nation:

The Grateful Dead. I'm neither American nor a dead head(okay, a fan), but I feel they're the quintessential American band. Almost every genre of American music is touched upon in their catalogue....and most in a good show.

Whether it be jazz, blues, R&B, bluegrass, jug band, C&W, R&R, folk, etc etc, The Dead played it, and on a good night........

Not to mention they had their own nation of fans.

representation from Indonesia coming up. well i dont think i can finish this in one go as indonesian music is huge. fellow compatriots feel free to add. oh and please disregard some of those crappy videos.

Rock:

God Bless (legendary rockers- 70s)
the video is just a recent tv appearance, but its quite a good performance
YouTube - God Bless (3-track+bonus) (watch in high quality)

Iwan Fals- the most politically infused musican in the country. nicknamed the Indonesian Bob Dylan.
YouTube - Iwan Fals - Bento

Edane- 90s hard rock/ metal band. the guitarist, Eet Sjahranie, is considered one of the best local guitarist. he is very concerned about the sound. this recording came out in 1990 when no one gives a damn about sound.
YouTube - EDANE IKUTI

Slank- rock n roll/ blues (mainstream) forefront. currently the number one group in terms of sheer fans and following (iwan fals above is second, i guess)
YouTube - slank I MISS YOU BUT I HATE U

oh, dont forget these guys: The Tielman Brothers
YouTube - The Tielman Brothers - Rollin' Rock (live 1960)
i think you guys must have heard them somewhere, youtube brought them up again.

Flowers- indie garage band. my personal favourite.
YouTube - THE FLOWERS

Metal:

Tengkorak
YouTube - tengkorak
Siksakubur
YouTube - siksakubur - pasukan jiwa terbelakang

Blues:

Gugun and The Blues Shelter- Hendrix and SRV influenced virtuoso guitarist
YouTube - I Got a Woman (Cover) - Ray Charles - Gugun & Blues Shelter

Adrian Adioetomo- delta blues guy
YouTube - Adrian Adioetomo - Cross Road Blues

Pop

Koes Plus- 60s- absolute legend and the originator of Indonesian pop music. down to earth lyrics, catchy melody. nicknamed the local beatles.
YouTube - Koes Plus - Kolam Susu

Chrisye- 70s- greatest solo pop musician. his recent death is a great loss.
YouTube - kala cinta menggoda

Glenn Fredly- i think currently he's the most popular pop solo performer.
YouTube - Glenn Fredly - You Are My Everything

Naif- 90s- starts of as a 70s revival band, but went on different directions recently. very humorous when live.
YouTube - naif (itulah cinta)

Padi- 90s- they're one of those rare bands that can be idealistic as well as achieving financial success. the video is overdubbed but the good thing is that it has subtitles wohooo
YouTube - Padi -Goddess Queen (Mahadewi)- English Subtitle

indie pop

White shoes and the couples company
YouTube - White Shoes & The Couples Company- pelan tapi pasti (created_DKV UnTar 2005)

Mocca- i think they're one of the most internationally popular ones.
YouTube - Mocca - The Best Thing In The World

Soul
maliq and d'essentials
YouTube - Maliq & D'Essentials - Kangen

indonesian jazz is.. huge. i think locally it is the most mature and developed genre of contemporary music. i dont think i have the capacity to list them at the moment.

lets venture out to those that i can't classify into genres.

Bengawan Solo by Gesang
i think this song is very popular internationally:
YouTube - Bengawan Solo
and the composer is still living and performing now
smily_headphones1.gif

Indonesia Pusaka- my favourite nationalistic tune
YouTube - Indonesia Pusaka

ethnic music

sundanese gamelan
YouTube - Sunda Javanese Gamelan

balinese gamelan
YouTube - Bali & Beyond Gamelan

yamko rambe yamko- papua folk song, from the easternmost province of the country
YouTube - Elfa's East-West Chorus - yamko rambe yamko
the performer, elfa's singers, is a group well known for their interpretation of ethnic and folk numbers.

Levi Gunardi- the dancer
YouTube - Levi Gunardi plays his composition "The Dancer"
behold the contemporary pianist who incorporates the gamelan feel into his composition!

man, so much i wanted to show to you guys, but damn im exhausted.
