This struck a chord with me...I can imagine the feeling of having that much money that could be easily lost. Must have been nerve racking on some level.

Does anyone here religiously review their change/dollars for collectibility/value? I've wondered over the years what currency I've spent that was worth much more than its face value. I'm sure it's not worth the time and effort to comb through all the money that passes through your hands, but has anyone made a good find like that?

I do have a small collection of old, rare coins that I inherited from my grandfather.

A 1894 dime would not look anything like the dimes that you carry today, so you wouldn't accidentally spend it. Besides, there is no way you would ever come across a coin anything like that in circulation.

I have a 1925 penny. Wonder how much that would cost.

EDIT. Just checked. 14 cents. Now I'm depressed.

"All across the country, Feigenbaum kept reaching into his briefcase to feel for the dime"

The courier sounds like an idiot. Isn't that kind of like picking at a scab? If you're likely to lose something locked in a briefcase, it's by opening it again and again.

I got a 1944 penny yesterday. If it has "D / S" on it it might be worth $70.

Found a graph where they tell you the values of wheat pennies. Maybe one of you will strike gold one day.

Thats insane!
I can think of 1000+ other things I would spend $1.9 million on, than an Dime.

A 1969-S Lincoln Cent with a Doubled Die Obverse coin was found in cirrculation (linky). It was valued at $35,000. So finding a coin like this is possible.

The value of coins is determined both by age and the number minted the striking year, with emphasis on the number minted the striking year.

Since only 24 dimes were struck in San Fransisco in 1894, you can bet its worth a lot.
