'evening folks,

I'm experiencing some excessive noise from the card. I've noticed that when it gets really bad, switching from the "Hi Sample Rate Digital Out" at 96Khz that I normally use to "2" speakers and back will bring back the noise to lower (useable but still annoying of course) levels. The noise is also present when I plug my headphones to the soundcard so my speakers are not at fault.

I am using the latest Via Envy drivers for HT-S soundcards. The website lists them as 5.20 but the control panel displays "5.12.1.3652".

I also moved a jumper around on the card. Here is the relevant excerpt of the posts that contained the instructions I followed:

Directly below this are the jumpers in question. Move both of them over one notch, so they short pins one and two. Congratulations, you just modded the card! Doesn't that feel good? Now, these results have not been verified, but I thought there was increased bass, for one, and an overall tightening of the sound with this tweak. YMMV.

I'm wondering if anyone got an idea on how to find the source of the problem and (hopefully) fix it.

Thank you for your time.

I use a Chaintech AV710 on XP with pc speakers and headphones with no noise, using only the supplied cd downloaded drivers, and mine has no noise at all and works awesome!
Must be Vista.

There are a lot of problem reports with the AV-710 in Vista.

That suggestion for modification is quite old, and was found by several people to have absolutely no affect on the Wolfson DAC's output--apparently the jumpers don't control anything on that side of the card, IIRC.

Make sure your mic input is muted in the Windows "volume control" panel -- even if you don't have a mic plugged in. Especially if you have the +20dB boost or whatever it is checked. I had the same problem with my AV710. Didn't notice it on speakers but it was intolerable with headphones. Muting the mic input got rid of the problem. Now silence is beautifully silent.
