Hey guys, I'm new here, and well after reading all of the other posts here... well I think I've made a mistake on my purchase. But I listen to trance and techno a lot so I think the extra bass will come in handy.

But I'm desperate, you guys seem VERY informed on all things headphone, and well I'd like some advice that involves amps, burning in, general review info, and just about anything else you feel that you can provied a headphone n00b

First of all, I'm gonna be using my MZ-R900 MD player most often for listening, so should I use an amp or not? Wouldn't the line-out suffice anyhow? Also, I've been reading about burning in these things, and some comments that were made about using strings on high cords or the Gladiator Soundtrack... should I just hook my EX-70's to the DVD player and let the whole movie play through? (They are SL vs. from Japan, don't know if it is two or three stripe

.) What do you guys think of these? Or any others? Generally from what I've seen I have wasted my money, well I'd like to know of some portable, good looking (not mandetory... but ya kno

), have bass but accentuated highs and mids, I've been thinking about finding a pair of Koss 35's. and then 888's, or even saving and making the jump to Ety's.

I'm willing to make mod's as well, can anyone post any mods for the ex-70 here? I find that most of the ones on this board are highly scattered... and my brain is hurting (sooo much information!!)

Thx to anyone that can help!

The Ex70lp has a lot of bass once its burned in.

The mod's for the ex70 lp accentuates either the treble or the bass. To reduce the bass, tape the port holes on the cover or back of the ear buds. I have tried this and personally, it still sounds boomy to me.

I have not tried the second mod of reducing the treble. Suposedly, you can stuff foam into the ear buds after removing the paper membrane with a pinhole on it. The membrane resides on top of the cylindrical structure which is exposed after removing the adjustable ear tips.

First thing you have to understand: the line-out is only for use *with* an amp! Without an amp you should only use the headphone out. Don't know if I read your post wrong or what, but it sounded like you were trying to use the line-out *without* an amp??

There are 2 main mods for the EX70:

1. The tape mod--tape over the 3 little holes on the back of each of the earbuds. This will reduce the midbass to more normal levels. OTOH it may also reduce the weak low bass to non-existence.

2. The foam mod--on the end of the earbuds that you stuff into your ear, there are 2 pieces of paper with a little hole in it. If you find the treble too piercing,
a) Remove the piece of paper
b) Stuff some foam into the sound conducting pipe that is then exposed. More foam, less treble. But this mod may make things sound muffled. You may want to think about whether you really need this mod, because once you've done it, it's sorta hard to go back.

What's this 2-stripe 3-stripe business? Do you mean 2 tips or three tips? Did your EX70s come with 2 sizes of tips for fitting onto your ear or 3? That's the question... Mine are EX70SL's too and they sound just fine. But then I'm in Hong Kong

Okay... don't panic... shed that green Versace dress and we'll talk.

If yours is an EX70SL, it should come with 3 tips, and its sound should be the most bearable among all EX70s.

After some modding, the EX70 has become the one pair of phones I can't do without. The "stuffing" mod wasn't entirely satisfactory to me, because it's a delicate balancing act. But if you're troubled by the EX70's sibilance (shrill, breathy sound), it'll alleviate the problem.

My personal mod is another matter... I like it, but it'll probably reduce isolation, and you might have to spend $ to buy stuff, so I'll let it pass.

I find that the EX70(SL)'s play dance/techno music fine. Sometimes when listening rock songs, the treble gets a bit too loud for my tastes, however, mine are burned in and I am using no mods.

You must mean 'attenuate'...

i'd still like to hear abuot this mod, and is the foam mod reversable??

still burning my ex70's in.. the mids sound better oddly after leaving them on w/ NPR all night, using the gladiator soundtrack as we speak (switching to mozart when it's done)

I'm one of the few who would actually like to reduce isolation. And I would like to hear it too, I might be willing to spend some cash on stuff.
