Hey,
I know this issue has been discussed a lot but I couldnt find an answer to my specific question. Which one has worse microphonics. I bought the ER-4P with the S adapter. I am using it through an iPod and I do not have an amp. I actually prefer the S because of the higher clarity and I like the lower bass response. However the microphonics are driving my crazy. Most of the time I am standing still when I listen to my etys. I dont really have a problem with the cord hitting my shirt but what really bothers me is the noise it makes when it drags or scrapes against your shirt. I am using the clip thing and it helps but everytime you breath you hear the cable. I was wondering which cable has less microphonics in the rubbing area. I actually prefer the sound of the S so if the S has less microphonics in the rubbing area I will actually send mine back to headroom and ask for an exchange. Thanks for your help

Hello,

You may try to wear a surgen mask after wearing the Etymotic. The rubber band of the mask fix the cord of the Etymotic near the ear piece. This dramatically reduce the microphonic noise from the cord. If you feel the mask uncomfortable, you may try to modify it.

EarHugger Mod The one I'm curently using

Note: I have no idea why redshifter remove his post about the mod but here the summary get some earhugger remove and discard the hearphones. Use the behing ear foamie to put the etymotic cord in it. And put it around your ear. Look at my picture on the second page.( by the way I use radioshack clone Radioshack Clone instead)

Instead of using the Camelback clips, use clips from cell-phone hands-free kits. they are just small black plastic alligator clips that are meant to hold a cord to your shirt. they remove all microphonics when clipped to your collar. if the cord-holding part of the clip swivels, make sure to glue that in place. I use them with my etys, no noise even when mowing the yard and moving all around.

Hi Knocturnal.

The ER4P really bothered me for exactly the reason that you described. I called it snoring. The ER4S do NOT snore due to the slippery cable. They are more prone to thumps, but that is not an issue if you use the included clip properly.

On the sound, I definitely prefer the S over the P. The P have more midbass, but it actually masks the deep bass. Step in the wrong direction to my ears.

I use the ER4S with my ipod, and rarely exceed the 50% volume setting. Adding an amp to the circuit never improved anything at those levels. It is a first gen ipod, so no line-outs.

Good luck.

Thanks GerG, that is exactly the reply I wanted. I think I will return mine to headroom and exchange it for the S version and then I dont need to lug around the S adapter. I have a trip to Sacramento for 10 days in which I will do some critical listening. I will get back on the 27th day of my 30 day trial and then I will probably exchange them. I really appreciate this GerG

I guess I am the only person who doesn't seem to notice the microphonics. Or maybe I am just used to them. Oh well. By the way I have the Ps.

Your not alone, I got used to it the first few days I had the ety's.

I have the P with S adaptor and I find the bass response to be far far better with the P. Its gotten to the point that I never use the S adaptor even with my amp.

The microphonics of the cord don't bother me at all, its something I got used to pretty quickly. The only thing that bugs me is hearing my breathing when the music is very quiet.

I've never tried the adapter. I did compare the S and P side by side (although I couldn't get them both into my ears at the same time, dangit). I probably would have gotten used to the snoring, but since the 4S didn't have it, there was no reason to adapt (pardon the pun). I did not hear better bass with the P, just more mid-bass and less treble. It was nice being able to try them both, and I have headroom to thank for that.
