I recently purchased an ER4-P headphone and find them to be TOO lound even at the lowest volume with my PDA/MP3 player. Can anyone recommend an in-line attenuator or other adapter to reduce the volume. Other suggestions?

Thanks!

Welcome to Head-Fi ! Sorry about your wallet

You might want to try this ->

You'll lose a good chunk of volume and gain a smoother frequency response. Good luck !

Get the 4S adapter...attenuators are nothing but resistors(and those wouldn't work well portably either). The adapters are also nothing but resistors, except with the proper values to bring it up to 4S sound.

If you don't mind losing the versatility of not having 4P, you could also just replace your entire cord with a less microphonic 4S cable from fixup.

You can also get a P –> S adapter there.

Thanks for your responses.

This afternoon I went to radio shack and got a "volume control headphone extension cord" for $5 (basically a 6 inch adapter with an in-line volume attenuator). It seems to do the job fine.

I'm sure it doesn't provide the same conversion as the adpaters to the 4S. But then again if I'm still using a portable devise, woudn't I still want more bass as the 4P is suppose to provde? Any concerns that the Radio Shack adapter might be sub-optimal for other reasons?

Usually adding another cable changes the characteristics of the sound. Whether this cable will make it sound better or worse is of course up to your ears, but it seems likely that adding the Radio Shack cable will degrade the sound quality, possibly significantly.

Sennhesier offers a volume/stereo/mono control device called the HZR6. I found it at their USA website under accessories. It has a volume slider. I don't know if this thing is better than the radio shack solution.

Another solution is to buy/build a DIY headphone amp with a special volume knob with a smaller gain. In effect, you can use the amp to reduce the volume level of the output signal to your headphone. The reason why I say smaller gain is because you want to rotate the volume knob to somewhere in the middle so the left and right channels are not imbalanced; many cheaper potentiometers seem to have uneven attenuation when the volume knob is very close to the bottom. This might be your best solution if you want to get the most out of your ER-4P.
