this is clearly going to be a depressing next couple of weeks for me. how many of you guys that own a pair of ety's have had to send them in for some kind of repair? well, i have had to do such a thing twice now...and i've only had them since november. first, the cable slipped down therefore exposing the wire. now, something worse has happened..the plastic tubing that houses the filter has split open which broke off a little piece...the phones are completely useless. it all happened the other night when i was simply taking off one of the foamies to replace it with another one. my guess is somehow the little piece that broke somehow bonded or stuck to the rubber tubing on the inside of the foamie earpiece more so than any other part of the plastic tubing, therefore causing it to break off. i am extremely dissapointed and quite frankly ashamed with etymotic...these are 300 dollar phones and this type of thing should not be happening AT ALL. i made it a point when emailing customer service, that what if this type of thing happens again (which if it does for a third time, then there's something incredibly wrong), after my warranty expires...will i be left with a huge ety bill and be forced to pay that bill only because my ety's are my pride and joy and i need them? the last time i sent them in for repair, it took two weeks and i seriously was going through ety withdrawl...i missed them so much. now, i have to go through that all over again. has this same problem happened with anyone else out there? let me know about your expiriences and advice if it is possible to offer! thanx head-fiers! MAN O MAN, i cant believe this!!!

PS>>>luckily i have my MDR F1's powered by my cosmic to tide me over until my ety's can be taken care of

if i didn't own the F1's i don't know what i'd do

Man, sorry for your bad experience. Don Wilson from Etymotic, is a member here and posts occasionally. Perhaps he'll comment. I know you have to be extremely careful when changing foamies, this is the second incident that I have read about where the plastic stem cracked during the process.

Did you try calling Etymotic?

hmm.... i've seen more than a few posts on the plastic parts of the ety breaking despite careful handling. i don't think i'll be putting up $275 for these until they change the housing material. I would expect titanium or something else light & strong.

I have the 4P's and so far (touch wood) I have not had any problems with them.

One reason for this is that I treat them REALLY GENTLY. One tip I would give owners is that when changing the filters only screw the changing tool a couple of half turns at the most then pull out.

I use the silicone tips so there's a lot less stress on them when changing - perhaps it's worth trying the tips out again to see if people can adjust to them - in my opinion they do sound better than the foamies.

I hope this helps.

trust me, i am gentle with everything i own...even with things that don't need gentle handling...i am what people call a Neat Freak! and there is nothing that i own that i am even more gentle with than my ety's.

every couple of weeks or so i try to give the rubber tips another shot and everytime i discover the same thing, less comfort, and twice as quiet and repressed soundstage. to my ears, the foamies sound a world better. sometimes i wonder that maybe the people that think the soundstage is tiny are just getting the same type of seal that i get with the rubber tips...because one can still have a nice quiet isolation, but at the same time also have a an experience that is no where near the ety's potential.

oh and i'm still having a hard time being forced to listen to my MDR F1's all the time rather than my preciousessss (ety 4S)

i hope all of you that own a pair of ety's never take them for granted, because when they're gone, even temporarily, it is just plain difficult to deal with

take care everyone.

zeplin -

So sorry to hear about your accident; now I'm getting nervous!

Please check out the thread: "I broke my Ety 4 - Please Help !!!"
by Ari. He had the exact same problem.

Unfortunately, not everyone will be able to take advantage of his particular-

-type of solution.

If memory serves, there was some feedback from ER seeming to indicate that ety's are made of Lexan.

Really, imo, this sounds like a warrantee issue.

Good Luck!

I have noticed recently a few tiny cracks around the filter area as well, and had originally thought it was just a blemish, but on closer inspection they are indeed cracks! I have only been using the white silicone tips and replaced the filters just once, I think it's a little odd that they would do that, especially considering how much they cost. I hope we don't have to pay for this kind of repair, hopefully Don will have some input on this.

aushadi: that thread with Ari having the exact same problem is what i thought of as soon as i discovered the broken piece. i was sure that i had read about that a few weeks earlier, but was not able to locate it.

as i have said before, i am very displeased at this problem. there is no excuse for this happening...it shouldn't happen on such an expensive product. and there is no way that i'll ever pay for any repair! however, if i am forced to pay a repair bill, i just might break and give in because i love my ety's so much.

Hicks My right etymotic plastic broke while changing foamies. Any final solution to this? the stem completely splitted. Is there any final solutions to this?
