I've done tons of reading on the ER4 series, and despite the lack of bass slam, I'm still very interested in them, because for under $200, I don't think I can find a better, ultraportable solution for my 4G iPod.

Alot of posts regarding the ER4 series lately has people preferring the 4S, even unamped, over the 4P. Is the 4P really that much worse? I'm looking for something with alot of detail (including good bass detail-- not just good mids and high end detail), but something that sounds natural as well. And something I can use unamped. I'll be listening to alot of rock (Veruca Salt, Cult, Dokken, emo rock bands), jazz and pop (Cibo Matto).

I initially thought that the unamped factor would mean that I would have to go with the 4P, but alot of people are saying that the 4S can be used unamped as well, and sounds better.

Does the 4P really sound bassy and muddy by comparison? I remember reading a detailed review on the 4P/S series and they never commented on the 4P as sounding muddy, even compared to the 4S.

So would $175 for a 5-day old pair of 4P's with all the accessories be a good deal?

The er-4P sounds perfectly fine. It's just that the 4S sounds better in comparison. I've only used the 4P, but didn't it sound muddy. But once I used it with an amp and compared it to a good full size, the sound was just lacking quite a bit. The only thing is that many people say the 4P braided cable is better than that of the 4S, microphonic-wise.

plus buy that converter cable and bingo your P is an S. but you can't make an S a P without sending it back and having surgery done on it...

I have had my Ety's for a month now. I purchased the ER4P's and bought the cable. The 4P's sound fantastic! and if you don't want to carry around an amp, they are great. I have purchased the P-S cable and have been experimenting with what I like better, 4P or 4S unamped. They both sound great but slightly different. You would have to decide which you prefer. I don't think it is a matter of one being better than the other, they are just slightly different presentations, but still incredible quality. To be honest I can't pick a definitive winner although I am leaning towards the 4S unamped, but it is hard.

You might just go ahead and buy the 4P and the cable so you have both, especially if you might use an amp with it occasionally.

I am a relative newbie so take my comments for what they are worth.
I mainly listen to classical music but did listen to Pink Floyd yesterday and had a quasi religious experience. You will hear things you have never heard before.

Enjoy, dshea

Also, if you can solder, you can make your own adaptor for real cheap. Xin had instructions on his site somewhere.
