Anyway, I've seen a good amount of pics of them around Head-Fi; straight on, you can see the infamous red and blue barrels a fair amount.

Another question I had was if you were able to wear the ER-4s "upside down style" where the cord hangs over the top of your ear. Thats one thing I always perfered with the Shures.

Sure you can, you can do that with any earbuds
It just doesn't look good.. or messes with the sound sometimes
