what are the main difference between the ER6 and the ER6i? theyre about the same price, so im looking for a pair that sound best with an ipod

i heard that the ER6 series has problems with the cable rubbing against your shirt and you'd pick up noise through the phones? that true?

microphonics is an issue with any canalphone... but it can be assuaged with shirt clips and/or looping over the ears.

the er6i has attenuated bass response and (i'm pretty sure) lower impedance compared to the er6. i haven't heard the er6i, but from what i've read and my experience listening to the er6, i'd recommend the er6i between the two.

or you could get the er4p and have the best canalphone sound (IMHO) under $400.

The ER6 need an amp to sound really good and some EQ (for me) to sound beautiful. They tend to be thin in the bass and edgy in the highs. The ER6i take a good step in dealing with the weaknesses of the ER6. The ER6i have a fuller bass and are less pronounced in the highs. If you're looking for something to work well with an ipod, it's worth it to go with the ER6i. And yes, the ER6 cable is quite microphonic, making very noticeable noises whenever it rubs against anything with texture, like your shirt. Again, the ER6i takes a good step in dealing with this weakness.

I use the ER6 with an amp (that is positively synergistic with them) AND use EQ with them in order to make them sound what I would call beautiful. Plus, I am always seated at a desk when I use them, so the microphonic cable problem is rarely noticed by me. The ER6 was Ety's first attempt to come out with a "budget" version of their ER4x's. In designing the ER6i, Ety seems to have taken the complaints they've received about the ER6 into account - with steps taken to make improvements in the weak areas.

With Etymotics, it's sort of like this,

ER4P > ER6i
ER4S > ER6

The ER4P is probably the best value for money if you can afford it. The clarity and detail and extension blows everything else away.

The ER6i come in a close second, but if I had the money I'd get the ER4P. The ER6i has more bass power to my ears than the ER4P but slightly less detail.
