I'm using a K81DJ as a closed portable. However, I wonder if there's any major gain in sound quality if I go with the AT ES7 or the Denon D2000 ?

(D2000 = 2 x ES7 = 5 x K81DJ)

BTW, I like the slick black metallic earsuit...

Thanks.

I'm aware that the ES7 has been in the spotlight lately. However, that particular thread does not have anything for the AKG or the Denon.

I was hoping that someone with more Denon time than me would step into this thread, but since nobody has yet, perhaps I'm elected, at least for the moment.

I had a few minutes with the Denon 5000 at the San Jose meet, but didn't own the ES7 at that time (now I do). From memory, I would say the two have a similar sonic character: very open and airy sounding, very clean and clear, without boominess in the mids or bass, but with plenty of low end.

The Denon sounded excellent. My ES7 sounds quite good, but I think the D5000 is in a different league altogether. I didn't hear the D2000, but you're probably reading the same Denon threads I am, and can draw your own conclusions.

Again, I only had a few minutes on the Denons and it was almost a month ago, so I'm no authority. I think I'm on safe ground saying they have a similar sonic character and that the Denon's better, but I don't think I can honestly say more than that.

But as long as I'm comparing the ES7 to headphones I've only heard at meets, I'll say that I like it a lot more than the K81DJ, which I think is fun if you like the extra bass it brings, but which doesn't have the ES7's clarity, being a bit on the murky/boomy side for my tastes. (In other words I think I agree completely with what Asr said.)

I haven't heard the D2000, but I do own the ES7. I had to make the choice between the K81DJ and the ES7 when I was buying mine. I asked around alot and read alot, and arrived at the conclusion that the ES7 has better mids as well as cleaner bass than the K81DJ. I like how the ES7 does not make everything boomy and muddy but can give your ears a good massage when the track you're listening to demands it. Very clean and punchy. It can also go very, very low. The ES7 is really lively and fun to listen too.

It also depends on your budget, since these 3 cans are priced very differently.

Decide how much you want to spend, then the decision becomes waaaaaaaay much easier.

Ditch the AKG and go for the AT! More comfortable, less bloated bass, more refined treble!

It looks like ES7 is the candidate, at least. Comfortable wear is very important to me, and controlled bass is the major cut. I love bass, but it's no good if it overwhelms the midrange.

I'd also heard the D5000 at headfest and I also think I like it a lot, at least more than the W5000. I also wonder if someone has some exposure to the D2000 and some comments in regard to the AT ES7.

Thanks to everyone for your inputs. I've got my ES7 today, and right out of the box, it's already worth every single penny. It looks like my K81dj is going to be lonely for awhile.

I bought mine from a vendor in a neighbor state, and shipping only takes couple of days.

I won't make any judgement on these cans for at least the next 200 hours of regular use. However, I can tell that all the summarized comments which you can find in post number 10 are true. The ES7 does not have less bass than the K81dj. However, its bass is better controlled and has more texture (Better resolution).

Can't help but to make you more anxious...
