Hey guys,

My ES3X should be showing up in a day or two and now I am wondering, what else do I need to get the most out of these IEMs?

Currently, I have a Cowon I7 and do 99% of my listening through it.

Anything you can reccomend would be much appreciated!

You are set for aural orgasm.

You "COULD" buy a portable amp and upgrade your DAP, but it should be unnecessary.
According to the law of diminishing return you will have to pay much more for a small
amount of SQ improvement(sometimes your ear can't tell the difference) and you will be
lessening the greatest advantage an IEM rig has over closed can rig: portability.

Thats kinda the way I am thinking.
A portable amp sounds cool and all, but do I want to sacrifice the portability of my rig? I guess right now I am leaning towards building a Mini3. Even if I don't end up dragging it around with me, it will be a fun DIY project.

Anyone have an opinion on whether the mini3 will improve the ES3x sound? Or is it just a waste of time?

If not the mini3, what other DIY portable might be a better idea? How about non DIY?

Thanks guys!

I hope you post your impressions in the ES3X appreciation thread! I will be ordering one myself pretty soon and I very much look forward to hear everybody's impressions.
I tried my UM3X with Pico, P-51 and Predator and the improvement was there but it was minimal.

Will Cowon D2 will be enough? Should I buy PICO DAC/Amp?
I listen also through the PC and have only OB sound card - So, should I buy the PICO for portable use and home, or should I buy just the Asus ESSENCE STX for home use and nothing for portable use?

[My ES3X also should arrive in few days - the excitement!!!]

Really, as the other's have said, just a lot of lossless media of your favorite music genre! Great sound can be had with your existing player. If you want a more exotic experience, you can add an ancillary amp and dac as resources permit. And definitely post your impressions to the ES3X Appreciation thread.

Best wishes on your new ES3X!

Pila405, the excitement must be building! In your case (and IMHO) I'd recommend that you go for the amp/dac combo. I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed my Pico AMP/DAC combo! I'm also considering the standalone Pico DAC for use with a separate amp, for home and/or portable.

Another option would be the iBasso D10, which from what I've read, is a fantastic value in SQ!

You guys already made the smart decision, which was to invest in a custom, rather than pouring money into a dac/amp. The magnitude of improvement you'll experience from the custom in comparison to the improvement from adding a dac/amp is much more significant.

I'd guess that you could expect a 10% improvement in sound for the 400 or so dollars you'd spend on upgrading your source/amp. The poorest value in audio, IMO.
