I'm trying to decide between the er6 and er6i. What are the pros and cons of each and which one would you guys recommend? I plan on using it with my Iriver H140 and I don't plan on using an amp.
I'm a newbie so please go easy on me. Thanks for your help.
er6i has a bit more bass and goes louder than the er6, which gives the impression of the er6i being a bit warmer. the er6 has less amount of bass and is requires more volume to sound loud, but it sounds 'cleaner' than the er6i. i also find the er6's double flange to be more comfortable and have lesser microphonics than the er6i.
If you haven't heard the ER6, go with the ER6i, it's meant to be used unamped. And it has slightly elevated bass and midrange sensitivity for use with portables. And it's white. Class dismissed.
As a long time user of the ER-6 sans (without) amp, I can tell you that they work, but thats about it. They have no bass to speak of, but other than that they are pretty good. They sound pretty even through the midrange (which is saying a lot for tiny speakers you stick in your ears). I am a big fan of the foam tips and I really never use the rubber slange ones. My iPod can power the ER-6s to reasonably loud volumes. Normal listening is around half (maybe a little over). I never feel the need to turn them up to full power, so I guess the iPod has enough power. I have been through several generations of iPod and they all performed about the same. I have considered purchasing a pair of ER-6is as an "upgrade" but I am not sure that they are $100 better than the ER-6s I already have.
In short. The ER-6s work fine without an amp, but don't expect any thumping bass (even with an amp).
