Got a used pair of ER6 in good overall condition, but the silicone casings that cover each driver unit are getting a bit holey (several nicks, one larger hole).

Anyone know if

a, it's possible to get replacement covers from Etymotic -they are removeable so hopefully, replaceable...

b, not having them on will affect SQ (will surely affect durability)

Not talking about tips here, but the casing of the drivers themselves (er, the ER6 L/R part!)

Etymotic has suberrrrb customer service. They always gave my silicone casings for free.

Huh? Silicone casing? Where?

ER-6i are held together with thermally formed polyolefin.

(heatshrink tubing. clear in this case.)

ER-6 look the same to me in the pictures.

Polyowhat?
Sorry, looks like a silicon based rubbery thing to me, but I aint no materials specialist!

If it was heatshrink I doubt I could pull it off & replace it again, which I've done...but again, I could be wrong!

Weird. Well, the ER-6i is cheaper than the ER-6. I guess the ER-6 has a silicone sleeve.

When i recabled my ER-6i, the clear heatshrink tubing i used when reassembling was indistinguishable from the sleeve i cut off of the drivers.

I just sent Etymotic an email, so we'll see what they say...

You used clear heatshrink to recover the drivers? If it worked for you it should work for me - where do you get this stuff?

Thanks

ps I'm not totally sure but over here, I think 6i is more expensive than 6!

I, uh, went down to my friendly neighborhood electronics store and said "I'll have that bag of assorted sizes of clear heatshrink tubing you've got there". It's a standard commodity consumable at my house - I have it in several colors too.

I believe i used the 5/8" size tubing. Shrank it with a hair dryer.

I've heard that you can get heatshrink tubing at places like autozone, but I haven't verified that, and they may not have the clear stuff.

smsmasters: wilco. I'll let you know what Ety say. Maybe we could do a joint order.

ericj: seems like a trip to Tandy's or Maplin is in order for me to see what clear/coloured heatshrink they have. So you didn't jazz your Etys up with a funky Rasta scheme?

Got tired one day of looking to see which er-6i I was putting in which ear - so went to drugstore and bought 2 bottles of cheap nail polish. So, one for left is Green, and the one for right ear is I guess would be termed Violet (it's what the store had cheap). So it took two coats and would easily fill in any imperfections. Nail polish holds well onto the surfaces that aren't flexed and looks good.....................for iM716, I just put a dot on the rear surface of one of them.

Heard back from Etymotic - very nice email (thanks Moe!) saying they'd send me replacement sheathings, no shipping!

Great customer service!
