Well, got enough cash to either go with a pair of ER6's and Sennheiser HD580's, or just go for the ER4P's. I'm a little concerned to go with just the ER4's since there have been more posts on their durability.

Any advice? I'll be listening to a good mix of music, but no classical (plenty of metal, hard rock, jazz, hip/hop & rap).

thanks guys!

I would say, if you have an amp, go for HD580 first and then keep up til getting ER4. Vice versa if you don't have amp yet. Or HD580 + Amp (eg. META) is also a very good alternative. IMHO, HD580 are good all around phones, but not portable and need amp. ER4P alone might not be suitable for all situations since you'll be almost totally isolated from the outside world.

Oooh, toughey...

The ER4Ps, why did you pick them over the ER4S? is this for a portable setup??

If not, the ER4S will sound better than the ER4P (although I have yet to hear by how much myself)

The HD580s to me sound a little dark compared to the ETYs, if you like things bright... they might not be the way to go, although the bass will be more... erm, realistic through the Senns, but as kajohndet rightly mentions... some of the budget should go towards an amp rather than the ER6?!

I'm trying to use this mainly as a portable setup, but I figured I could afford the HD580's and I have heard they sound right fine out of the headphone out of a D-25S.

Although it looks like newegg hiked the price some $75 on the 580's--- bastards!
