ok ive been shopping around for awhile, and ive come to some conclusions i guess about my needs and whatnot.

i need closed headphones, for general isolation and travel reasons.

i need something that sounds good(preferably REALLY good)

and i dont want to buy a set and go "hmm i wonder what i couldve gotten if i bought some better headphones"..i dont have the mental stability or money to keep upgrading. upgraditis=bad

so i figure ill just suck it up a little and get the ety's. im thinking about the P's cause im not going to buy an amp(right away at least). and i love the idea of how small those things are, no clunky cans hanging over my head

so does this decision sound reasonable to you guys?

anyone with the etys got anything negative to say about em?

i listen to primarily trance, and some industrial, and also just about everything else from time to time. will the etys be ok for this?

also another question, i know its impotant to have a good source, especially since i wont be using an amp so could you guys suggest what i should go for in that route, wether it be a CD player with a nice output or a MD player (would the sony N505 be good?) whats a decent PCDP for a reasonable price?

sorry about the source questions i wanted to fit it all in one thread

hey if i dont like em i can either send them back to headroom or sell them to one of you guys for somethign reasonable

I got the ER-4S a few days ago and I can't be happier. They seem to sound better and better the more I listen to them.

I don't think you can go wrong with these cans.

I listen to house / trance at work and i'm amazed at how clear these things sound. But i'm also part of the population that has no problems getting a good seal and good bass from them.

For source, I have used: ipod + Sony D25S discman. For the discman, I usually use the line out and my TAH.

On the ipod, it has no problem driving the 'S'

Come to the Connecticut Head-Fi meet on the 23rd of this month, and try the phones out for yourself and decide. There will be Etymotics and other phones there, along with a number of sources and amps. Check out the Meetings, Parties, Get-Togethers section for more info.

Hi Mike,

go for it, these are amazing headphones with great sound. You don’t necessarily need an amp to drive them. I use an older sharp minidisk-player and it sounds really good from the headphone out even compared to my home setup (Rotel transport/dac combi and Naim Headline). Later when upgraditis gets you (and it definitely will

), you can still buy the ER-4P to ER-4S adapter and a dedicated amp without the feeling of having wasted money.
Note that the etys are not really suitable for walking around due to the microphonics of the cable. But of course they are perfectly portable. I read that some of the head-fiers here couldn’t get used to the fit but I personally have no problems with it.
Apart from these drawbacks you certainly can’t go wrong with the etys.

Give them a try! If you order from HeadRoom (a sponsor of this forum) you can try them out for 30 days and see if you like them. If not, send them back and the only thing you've lost is some shipping charges.

However, would also be good to go to the Connecticut Head-Fi meet if you have a chance. The only real way to know if something is going to work for you or not is to try it out. What better way to try a WHOLE bunch o' stuff than to hang with some fellow Head-Fiers and listen to a bunch of stuff that you would likely not have a chance to try otherwise (not only headphones, but amps, other sources, cables, etc).

BTW: I started off in about the same boat: looking for something decent sounding that provided some isolation. Got a pair of Koss, the Plug to try. Was an improvement over the stock cans that came with the portable CD player, but not much. Ended up eventually coming to this site, trying a number of headphones, spending a lot of money on stuff that I didn't really like, and eventually ended up with the Ety ER4P/S. Should have just gone with the Ety purchase initially... would have saved a LOT of money and time!

BTW: Welcome to Head-Fi! Sorry about your wallet (standard greeting here).

Good luck!

Everybody STILL thinks i'm crazy for spending all that money on headphones. So whenever they ask to borrow a pair, i give them my stock phones from my old Aiwa PCDP..... which isn't as horrible as the one's I've been hearing lately.
