Grado's tend to have a peaky sounding treble. Grado's also leak sound like crazy, I would not really use Grado's anywhere where privacy, or ambient noise is high (train/bus/plane). It's hard to beat the Ety (or any IEM for that matter) in those situations.
I really don't think grados are a good option for mobile use because they don't block out outside noises. As a result, you must turn up the volume to hear anything which may cause earing damage. They also leak alot.
I have both. I use them straight from an iPod while biking places. No amp. I really like both of them but they have clearly different purposes. I wouldn't really promote either of them for anything to extrenuating since I have had my Grados fallen off many times during a ride. It isn't that bad but it isn't like a slick Sony heaphones. But, once you can get past that theya re great headphones. The only thing I find with the ER-4Ps are that they are a bit quiet when out in public. Also, when you walk you can hear your footsteps witht he etymotics due to the extent of isolation. So, I wouldn't sugest the etymmotics, but I find the grados great. The best part has to be the semi audiobility. I can hear what is going while it sounds mute. It really is perfect for a cyclist who needs to hear cars approaching and the traffic, but doesn't what to hear it at full volume. I use my etymotics more at home with an amplifier or on a plane wher eyou can barely hear the enignes of a turboprop. It really is quite astounding. I would suggest just buying them both. I find they are perfect compelements. Anytime the etymotics aren't a good choice, the grados work perfectly or vice versa. Quiet library....no good for grados....excellent for etymotics. Walking down the street.....no for etymotics.....great by grados.
I hope I helped. If you have any questions or anything you need that i haven't addressed maybe I could do some tests for you. Just ask. I am more than glad to answer since people being helpful is how I bought both of these heaphones.
