thnks great dane
i have the k81 dj, but i think that the bass is a little bit too much.
i can literally fell the vibration in my ears. it too hot in cali (v6 leather pads)and i want to go really portable. so with just the adjusted eq and no amps would the e4p fit my needs.
btw i listen to hiphop and adequate bass is needed but not too much just enough for a balance sound

The ER4P doesn't need an amp but I can't say for sure about that player because I've never used a Cowon. I have used the 5-band EQ on a Zen Vision:M and it worked well with the ER4P.
When I used the SuperMini & ER4P, the bass could be very intense with electronic music like Infected Mushroom, etc.- I would get that pressurized effect.
I've used my ER4P with my main home gear and the Aphex 204 processor can pump out huge bass, the ER4P/S can handle all the bass boost that you could ever squeeze out of a portable player...no comparison to the 204.
Yes, the ER4 is bass shy but it can handle bass processing if needed.
Though I hardly use EQ myself, I sure will do it if I want more bass. Adding P to S adapter is also a good idea but the improved dynamics won't really benefit hot-mixed hiphop imo.
If you have a chance don't forget to try Atrio M5, huge bass with surprising details. They're probably what you are looking for.
