So, I've got an iPhone. Audio related, there are a couple of problems. One of them is that the headphone jack, although it is a mini-jack, the physical hole around the jack is a little too small to fit most mini plugs without cutting down the jacket around the plug. Luckily, the iPhone comes with earbuds that not only fit the jack, but have a mic in the wire, and a little button that pauses your iPhone or answers a call, etc. It's really cool...except they suck. Seriously.

Now, I have a pair of Ety ER-6i's that I really love. Do you guys think it would be possible to somehow combine the Ety's and the earbuds so that the Ety's would fit the small jack & somehow that little button thingy would work on them? I imagine you'd have to graft them together somehow. I've heard that there's a tutorial on engadget to swap JVC Marshmellow drivers into the earbud casings, but my problem is mostly with the physical casing, so that wouldn't really help. If this is possible, anyone want to do it for a reasonable amount of money?

oh..lol..I feel kinda dumb now!

It looks like the most complicated part involves he tight inner-workings of he Etys. Would it mess anything up if I just cut off the ibuds and spliced the a couple inches of the Ety wire (with the Etys attached) to the ibud wire?

I might change the impedance, but it shouldn't be anything to worry about, if there is someone who can confirm that please chime in. But if you are will to try I wouldn't worry about the impedance too much.

I recabled my Altec Lansing iM716s, it was pretty easy, the flex PCB was actually pretty forgiving for soldering and the tight space isn't as bad as it seems. Good luck with it, I would only try if I was confident with my soldering skills though. unless you don't mind the possibility of losing the er-6s.

Again, I wouldn't worry too much, I made so many mistakes since the Altecs were my first recable, the PCBs were almost black by the time I got it to a point where I was confident they would hold, but they worked fine.

Leave it to Apple to pull something like that.

I'm glad you're thinking ahead, though. Kudos to you! I think it'll be pretty awesome when you're done!
