I was just wondering if you need an amp with ER-4S. Will it improve the music a huge amount. I am willing to buy one, the META42 but I just want to know if they sound ok without an amp, or even if the ER-4P needs an amp although I prefer the ER-4S. I will be using it through an iPOD. Any advice is welcome.

I use my ER4S w/o an amp on the iPod and I find them to be perfect. That is however, just my opinion.

I love my Ety's. If you can deal with the fit and seal issues (I can), they are divine, and will scale to whatever you use as a source or amp. I have the ER4S's and use it with my 2nd-gen iPod. I find the sound quite nice. Using a portable META, or something, may improve the sound & slam a bit. But it seems a bit "anti-thetical" to the whole iPod idea, so to speak. It would be a shame to start adding extraneous cables and such. And I don't need it for good sound when I'm out and about, or on the train. Very nice combo.

I have not heard the 4P's with the iPod to compare.

When I first got my Ety Er4s's I wasn't all too thrilled with them until I got an amp. They are, in my opinion, rather difficult to drive to satisfying levels without an amp. Without an adequate amount of power driving them, they sounded thin and bright. Be forewarned though, they are very revealing of any shortcoming in the signal path. I found I had to upgrade my source shortly after receiving them....
