Right now I am using this yamaha external soundboard thing and the muddy bass is killing me. On top of that, I can't use the digital out in this thing.
I want to purchase the ART DI/O but doesn't have a transport to feed it. During browsing, I come across the Chaintech $27 cheapo card that uses the Envy 24/96 chip. Can I then get the card and use my computer as a transport?
My computer is THE machine in my bedroom, I use it as TV, dvd player, jukebox. I prefer not to purchase a separate transport.

Anyone has experience with computer as a transport?

Whether or not you can use that with the ART really depends on whether that card has a coaxial out. The ART DI/O only accepts coaxial.

I am currently using my computer as the source with the audiotrak prodigy 7.1 as the source and it sounds great. No complaints so far.

Did you actually find that in a store somewhere? the audiotrak card I mean.

-EDIT-

Oh and and another question, does it actually support DVD-A like they claim (they claim advance resolution support and the advance res symbol can only be found on DVD-A's)

actually what I am trying to get at is will the pci card and/or ide cdrom hinder the transport?

Also, will the 24/192 bells and whistles actually make a difference?

I got the prodigy from tigerdirect.com, i dont think the audiotrak is actually available from the stores, but i would suggest that you check on their website, i think its www.audiotrak.net

As for DVD-A, I frankly do not have a clue as i do not have a DVD-A disk to test.

Theorectically if the connection is all digital from the cdrom to the soundcard and out , there should not be a big problem. Its just that there is potential for noise and jitter to be introduced into the signal from the soundcard. I should be getting my DI/O shortly, I will let you know how it works out.

So how did it work out?

I sused to use the Envy 24 based M-Audio Delta 410 as a transport to the DI/O and it worked great, and sounded much better than the card's analog outs. The CD-ROM should be no difference as a transport, especailly if you use a software like EAC that makes perfect copies of the CD's, i.e. as good as a transport gets.

BTW I understand how you use your comp, I am the same way, I don't have any seperate TV, DVD, CDP, etc, etc.
