Its the amp that'll be responsible for driving them not the DAC. You'll need an amp - for something cheap look for the LD series. As a DAC the 0404 is good, cause I am using the same card on an AT A900.

As you get more discerning however you'll want to switchover to a proper DAC and just use your soundcards digital out

the emu 0404usb is a nice dac/amp. I really like them compared to the $1200 apogee minidac but that just the dac part. The headamp on the emu isnt the best but you could always hook up an external amp later on to it

I'd recommend first trying out the inbuilt headphone amp on the USB0404 with the DT770 's and see how you find it. Its certainly no slouch (I used it for a few months to drive both HD650 + DT990)....

Not enough power for some people...but for other users of the inbuilt headamp on the EMU , its proved to be more than adequate for their listening needs (see various examples of this within the 0404 USB threads ) . Thats why I'd suggest there is absolutely no harm at all in the OP trying it out first with the DT770 ....before making a decision on whether they think its worth spending extra money on a seperate amp.

Just to make sure I understand, you are saying the dac part of the emu is about as good as the dac part of the apogee? That sounds like a pretty good deal!

I think saying it doesn't have much power might be a bit extreme. It might have less power than some amps, but those go to what I would consider rediculous levels.

I'm interested in the answer to the same question. Looks like someone else [ph0rk] has done this already and had success though.

to be sure. i mean if it's going to be used as a DAC then why not use the headphone out too right?

I don't know how sensitive the DT770/250 is, but it just gets listenable levels with the K701 on max, same with DT880/250.

yup..but the headphone amp part in the apogee is better. but you could do better with emu 0404 usb + external amp
