Basically the title of this thread says it all. Currently I listen to music primarily on my 5th gen iPod and on my PC. My PC soundcard is an Audigy LS and I am looking to upgrade my source components as I feel my cans will benefit. I see the Emu 0404 USB is $150 after rebate from guitar center. Is this the best source upgrade route for my cans around the $150 price range?

In terms of DAC + amp, probably so.

I was about to say 1212M, but that doesn't have an amp, and the sound signature might not match well with a Grado headphone. I get the impression that the AKM DAC in the 0404 USB is a little less analytical and more musical.

But some say the opposite, that as a rule, the "house sound" of AKM tends toward the overly analytical, but I think that means it shows bad recordings for what they are. It's very detailed on well-recorded acoustical music.

This DAC is such a bargain at $150. I have tried hard not to like it, but I just keep coming back to it. Let's review:

- AKM AK4396 DAC chipset is a well-respected solid performer in the <$500 price range
- 24bit/192kHz sampling rate, software selectable
- plug 'n play USB driver implementation + native ASIO drivers
- S/PDIF coax and optical connections
- balanced line inputs and outputs
- built-in headphone amp
- 1/8" stereo mini output can also drive computer speakers
- external power supply (doesn't rely on computer USB power)

Wow, is there anything that even comes close to this at $150 (after Guitar Center rebate)? I think not. This is without even considering the exceptional software bundle.
