The Massdrop you purchased is a XlV, the original tuning (with some minor differences caused, I think, by differences in shell and tube materials of the Massdrop one). The R is the second iteration. The XlV is more forward in the mids and a bit more.... exciting. The only time I use the R side of my XR is if the track is mixed a bit too bright or otherwise not working with the XlV side. The Mamas and the Papas are definitely R. Some symphonic and jazz stuff also seems a bit better with the R side. I'd say 98% of my albums are XlV.

Oh, and I went searching around and came up with an Ares ll balanced I had stuck away. That's going to go right on the MassDrop Zeus. Which should be here Monday.

Since giving away Leo II my Phantom have been permanently paired with Eros II 8W (aside from reviewing). The PlusSound Tri-Copper is really nice too (I have the X6) and Ares II 8W is a solid choice as well.
