Empire Ears - Discussion & Impressions (Formerly EarWerkz)

Like wise i'm debating between customs and universals.

I have the phantoms and zeus in universals, and am toying with the idea of getting the legend x after i got hooked on legend x (with burn in). Feeling like completing the holy trinity lol.

problem i can foresee with universals legend x is that i might get them confuse with my current phantoms. I also can't reshell universals phantoms to custom since empire doesn't allow it now.

Kind of miss the fit of customs but it've been about ~10 years since my last pair of jh16s and 8a

Is the audio profile between custom's and Universal's so different that it's worth getting customs at the risk of poor resale and sharing opportunities?

It varies between companies, ears, tips used, etc., but the general consensus is that customs will provide a better listening experience. A part of that is sonic benefit of improved acoustics, better driver alignment, etc., but it also comes from greater comfort, a more consistent/repeatable seal and superior isolation. Also, the ability to design the IEM to your heart's content is definitely a major plus. :D

is phantom an upgrade or a sidegrade , in your opinion ?

as compared to the zeus? Different beast to me. Zeus is more of a resolution king, Phantom is when I want to feel the music and in a relaxing mood. To me its almost in between a side grade and upgrade. If you're comparing to legend x, that is definitely a sidegrade

I just ordered the X after reading PinkyPowers revew, but my wallet is hurting soo much, ah well..
Only thing now is i got universal version and wonder if custom is much better, i much prefer uni tho,
Any advice welcomed please

I got the Phantom customs and feel they are much better fit and SQ than Universals, but others like the Univ best as you can resell them easier. Either way you are going to be so happy with them. I loved them, but went Phantom as it's closer to my personal tastes.

For me, it's just like what's the point if I can't share them with other people and let them experience it too? (especially non-audiophiles) :)
wish I could say the same. I’m always reminded of that “happiness only real when shared” note Christopher McCandless “Alexander Supertramp” wrote under the passage in Doctor Zhivago: “[...]and that unshared happiness is not happiness.” (Into the Wild, biographic movie)

But those around me never wanted to even try once the gear I owned for many months, such as LCDI4, Aeon Flow Open, IMR R1, idsd micro bl, onkyo dpx1, zx2, wm1a despite me proposing. But they sure relish in repeating the amount of money I waste buying and reselling and losing money/value as I keep changing gear (they aren’t wrong either). It’s a bit perplexing too since my sis and my dad for example are still grateful and do believe the added audio pleasure. Had gifted them both Trinity Delta iems, a Fiio M3 then Cowon Plenue D to my dad, and recently the AAW Q to my sis. They love em and take em everywhere. And it’s not like my dad doesn’t like music, au contraire, it was him that got me into the hobby, he still uses the same B&W 2ch speakers / NAD amp / Marantz cd player...

Tying it back to this topic: no remorse for going custom on the Legend X. Instant isolating comfortable and permanent seal albeit at the cost of a bit more cleaning maintenance compared to uiem ear-tips.

Truly a Legendary review for the Legend. Thank you for writing it Pinky! I think I can speak for everyone in saying we all look forward to your reviews when you post them!

It's a free upgrade, the fit is usually good with empire, just make sure the impressions are well done
No price difference between Universal and Custom, but it is definitely not free (or even an option) to upgrade from universal to custom!

If you like more bass and lx is out of your budget try ca Atlas
Or better yet try EE Vantage

You might be surprised when you get your custom Legends that we now use a horn-bore, so they are actually even easier to clean than Universals!

On the subject of customs, if anyone is interested in custom fit but unsure if it would be as perfect as everyone advertises, please don't hesitate to PM me! I'd be happy to explain the factors that go into that as well as direct anyone to an audiologist in their area with proper instructions for a perfect impression.

Come to think of it, we have had quite a few reviews of the legend x but only one (nic’s) for the phantoms

Once I get my other assignments out of the way, I’ll be writing a full review of the Phantom as well. In the mean time, you can check out the extensive impressions post I wrote in March. I published it a few days before CanJam SG on this thread, so if shouldn’t be too hard to find.

i am not seeing any news on a EE demo tour in Europe , so this means that probably EE won't make this happen

A lot of the above depends on finding a good audiologist who knows what they are doing. Exceptions to every rule (and you're looking at one!).

How flush are ciems meant to be in the ears? Just got a set back (from another customer) and they are at an angle, almost like \ / in the ears though I do get a relatively good seal.

Thanks.

Most of my CIEMs are angled that way. With that shape, it's easy to detect when the CIEM is fully inserted (when the bottom of the faceplate is flush against the skin), it's easy to pull the IEM's out (by levering against the top of the faceplate) and it prevents cables with larger plugs from pressing against your skull and/or breaking the seal.
