Empire Ears - Discussion & Impressions (Formerly EarWerkz)

It's a lovely wire but curiously doesn't play well with my DX220 except for the ESRs. Every other IEM I have used them with sounds more like an SPC than copper. Same for the 4W. I'm teaching myself to make my own cables once I get some bits from Electro Acousti.

I don't think I can buy anything at the moment. But, purely out of interest, what price would you be asking for that 8 Wire on its own?

To make this relevant to the thread here, I think it would go well with the EE Legend X.

Me too! :) I'm ordering cheap bits to practice first, then once I'm competent I'll attack some higher-quality stuff!
Got any online guides/videos you've been using? I watched the two-part Naked Tutorials from sgaudiohive on YouTube, they spend 90% of the time talking about stuff that seems easy, and then when it comes to the detailed/technical stuff they just use that "fast-forward" style and it's very frustrating! Would be a good tutorial otherwise

(edit: to make it relevant - I love my EE LX! And I promise to move more detailed discussion to the DIY forum - just wanted to ask about the guides)

The sound signature of the Valkyrie goes against everything that I like in an IEM but I still somehow ended up with a pair anyway. They're very fun and good at what they set out to do.

Folks, how's the LX's sub-bass here between 2:50-3:23 if you play at very high volume? Too much or just enough?

It's pretty good, absolutely not too much. However, the non-video version of the track (I looked at both on Tidal) has MUCH more sub-bass, and I think conveys the intended effect better. In that version, it's downright spooky...

EDIT:

And just to confirm what I'm hearing, here are spectrograms for the video version and the audio version, respectively.

You can see the video version doesn't have anything hitting too hard below around 200Hz, but the audio version has stuff hitting all the way down around 20-40Hz. It's an instantly noticeable difference on the Legends.

Oh, thanks for the remark, i didn't notice this with the video version, just wanted to quickly embed some song source. I was actually talking about this 20-40 hz thing. So if it sounded fine i'm gonna grab a set soon.

Agree with the "spooky" comment.

@AboveNBeyond great song, may have to put this into my test rotation for the sub-bass

Yeah, that's a good benchmark song. There is also that mid-frequency shout after Roger says "bye" and cymbal strikes right after that. This song is actually good to check any frequencies.

Can anyone point me to a general summary/primer for Empire's current lineup? Somehow I was unaware the Empire was in my backyard even though I've been in Atlanta 20 years. Given how close they are, it seems like a waste not to give the showroom a visit and get an ears on. From reading here, it looks like there are things to pay attention to with each of the higher tier models and it would be useful to go in with intention to observe some of those specific differences. Obviously, my own preference and impression would drive any purchase, but as I'm totally new to the brand, a bit of direction from folks who have heard multiple models would be welcomed.

I'd bring various sources to test with btw - Kann Cube, Fiio Q5s, iFi Hip Dac, Woo WA11 and WA8.

Thanks!

Jeff

I have Empire Ear Nemesis

I found this song on Amazon Music HD 24bit 44.1khz

That vocal effect is HUGE! (but not overkill) very "devilish" and dramatic.. I imagine that's close to how they heard it in the studio when mixing.

if your getting close to 60 and have some hearing loss i can recommend the Nemesis. The have killer sub, (but not a dumb overall 'whooley' bass boost) and some powerful high frequency lift. Designed in conjunction with a senior, top line studio & live session drummer who wanted to 'feel' his kick drum sub punch - and all the timing intricacies of high frequency information from other instruments and his own cymbals, hihat and snare etc..

I tend to prefer a more bass heavy sound. Years ago I told myself that I was going after a neutral signature, but time after time I prefer better bass output and it's true for my speaker preference as well. Budget isn't a factor though the jump in price up to Wraith reflexively makes me wonder what it's offering to be worth being up by itself in that price tier.

Sounds like Nemisis, Valkyrie, and Legend X (in ascending price order) are good places to start.
