A lot tamer these days, no jail time, no drugs; music seems to have less of bite.

Anyhow, before i went into rock, i listened to alot of Slim Shady, just wondering what other's thoughts are on him and his music.

I hate rap, I hate hip-hop.

How he can call his work "music" is beyond me. He writes words on paper and says them - he doesn't play an instrument, doesn't "sing", nothing.

There are rap/hip-hop artists that actually do these things. The Beastie Boys, for example.

Eminem, of course, represents a huge chunk of why Rap music is popular - he made the genre popular, and himself popular, by simply being an out of control freak who has no limits to his insanity. This is unfair to other artists, who actually have to be good to become famous. Marketing is taking too much control in music, and Eminem is a prime example of just that idea.

So... tallentless, tasteless, and lucky. Not what I call a guy with good "music".

^^^ I can agree with that.

Rap has been popular way before Eminem .. you just haven't taken the time to discover the artists who laid the foundation for the " Eminems " out there. And I'm not saying you have to because music is all personal preference but why say you hate something that you don't know about?

What instruments do the Beastie Boys play? What songs do they " sing " on?

I agree with about 80% of what aman said there. The things that i disagree on are that he is talentless. I dont know about you but its damn hard to rhyme/rap, and to do so fluently in real time "free style" (god im sooo white) is not something that should just be passed off as nothing. I also think he has some contributions to the beat and sound of the track. He doesnt simply write things down and pay people to write the music for him.

But other than that, i really dont see much skill in rap. Its mostly all attitude and image (gold teeth... What who the hell though that was a good idea in the first place
rolleyes.gif
) If you want to play an instrument and rap, then you will have my attention.

PS: Why the hell are rappers alowed to make up words? Isnt that taking ALL of the challenge out of rapping? If i could get away with making up words as a rapper i would so be rich... i think.

Wow Naga, you and I are in the same boat. Before I turned to vintage rock, I used to be a fan of his. What I like about Eminem is that he articulates his thoughts very well in his rap. Also, he is very modest about his success. He's one of the few artists that I know who doesn't rap about being gangster and rich all the time. Although some people don't like his demented humor, I think it's iconic because it shows that he likes or wants to be different, and he knows that rap can be funny as well as serious. I guess to sum it up, Eminem is just versatile, and he knows that he's a fish out of water so he doesn't pretend to be someone he's not. That to me, is very charming.

Nowadays, I completely disprove of his modern songs because of his affiliation with 50 cent...and that crack unit. I feel that he has shifted his focused from disgruntled youths to ghetto wanna be's. A lot of his individuality is gone now.

I completely disagree with the banal slogan "rap is crap". Rap can be very meaningful from certain individuals. For example, RATM wouldn't have the same charisma if Zack hadn't rapped. It takes skill to articulate thoughts into rhyme. The best example of skillful rap I can think of is Illmatic by Nas.

I realize now that some of his songs had a slight rock flavor to it; a bit of guitar sampling here and there; a sincere emotional statement and the want to do better.

Encore was too much of what I didnt like about Eminem Show; by then I was captivated by Tool, Nirvana and other rock bands and Em couldnt compete as much.

I didn't mean the Run DMC type of rap, I meant TODAY's kind of rap - two very different things IMO.

The Beastie boys all play an instrument. One is a drummer, the other two play guitar/bass. On the 25th aniversary of SNL, they play instruments with another performer (forget who).

AGREED

Eminem is very different from most rappers IMO. He's not one of those bling bling people (or atleast not in the same way as 50 Cent (I hate)). He "sings" with emotion (e.g. The way I am).

The tracks that I hate from eminem are the ones that are made for a larger group of public appeal, e.g. Just lose it, Another slim shady, My band. They are "trying to be funny".

Anyway, just my opinion.

Going the opposite direction: I've been listening to rock for my entire life, but only started really paying attention to rap recently.

I don't listen to very many rappers, but Eminem is incredible. I would have to assume that anyone who says he has no talent has never paid much attention to his work. His verse lyrics are insanely good and his delivery is very good too. He's not doing too bad as a producer, either. But when push comes to shove, it's all about the rhymes.

I was turned off by the whole Slim Shady thing at first. I'm not really the rebellious type and someone putting their middle finger up and spewing profanities doesn't impress me much. If "Rock Bottom" had been his first hit instead of "My Name Is", maybe I would have jumped on the Eminem bandwagon a lot sooner. But even the songs I don't like... I have to say they are all pretty clever.
