So I rented Dummy from my library, and I'm really liking it so far. I haven't really gotten into this genre of music before so I'm wondering if there's any other bands like Portishead that are worth checking out. Also, any underground hip hop that I should look at? I just picked up Deltron 3030, and I liked that as well.

Maxinquaye by Tricky, and Mezzanine by Massive Attack are the most common recommendations in this area, I think.

You might also look into Nightmares on Wax and Thievery Corporation.. but that's about where my familiarity with the genre ends, so I'll leave the rest to somebody else

Theres enough Trip-Hop outt here to make youre headspin, literally. However, im perterbed by youre request (comparison), I dont see any similarities b/w Deltron and Portishead. Are you looking for recommendations from two completely diff. genres??
Anyways...

Start with the kings of Trip-Hop:
Massive Attack-(any album)
Portishead-(any album)
Lamb-Lamb
Thievery Corp.
Smith and Mighty
Everything but the Girl
Hooverphonic
I could go on and on...

As far as intelligent, underground hip-hop is concerned:
Blackaliscious
Mos-Def
Dr. Octagon
Aesop Rock
Atmosphere
Jurassic Five
Slum Village
Cannibal Ox
Roots Manuva
THE, Roots

Enjoy.
