Electronic Music Guide

Interesting read to be sure, but more annoying than informative thanks to the author's condescending and holier-than-thou attitude. Now, I agree with him when it comes to a lot of the commentary, but if you're going to write a "guide" then make it a guide, not an excuse to badmouth the whole scene. God forbid someone actually takes this seriously rather than formulating their owns opinions.

Still, an interesting read.

Ahhhhh...the legendary, and I do mean legendary Ishkur's Guide to Electronic music. Unless I missed one, it's been referenced three times, on this site alone, in the last couple of months (one my own

) and many times over the years.

Anyway, it's great! I like the tone. To me, it's a fitting snipe at genre enthusiasts, who in my experience tend to get full of themselves and employ the verse as a wall to ostracize interested newcomers.

I've also wondered if there were similar guides for other obtuse genres such as Metal etc?

Ohhhhh yea, I've run into that many times over the years. I was an avid beatmixer back in the day but I enjoyed his poking fun at the mind-boggling genrification that happened, especially in the jungle scene.

Every time a producer dared use a sample other than 'Apache' or 'Amen', or moved a snare drum a 16th of note, or used a sawtooth waveform for the bass instead of square, some clown would coin a new genre.

What he doesn't mention is the phenomenon wherein old genres are 're-invented' using the word 'progressive'. In the past 7 years, tribal house, tech trance, electro, dub techno and minimal techno have all enjoyed renewed popularity by being peddled to a new crowd as 'progressive'.

Very well put.... the author just comes across as a real idiot. A bit too desperate to gain recognition , rather than someone who actually really enjoys music and wants to share his enthusiasm/knowledge with others. Unfortunately , there's probably quite a few impressionable types who will take it seriously ...

I posted it for one reason; please click downtempo and then at the very bottom click on electronica. This "definition" of a genre gets thrown around quite a bit, and its getting to me

. Well also for some people to get an idea of how vast the electronic music genre is. I only recently started paying attention to the music subforum.

as for the authors tone, i think the observations of this person should taken the same way one would take the observation of a comedian in a comic show. they have their roots in truth but in the end its just humor.

I've been a fan of Ishkur's guide since version 1.0. In fact, if I bother to boot my PC, I think I've got an .exe version (self-loading Flash runtime) of 1.0 somewhere.

Yes, Ishkur's snarky, but at least he's thorough. It was The Guide that got me into Goa Trance, and for that recognition is due.
